A very relaxing break in all respects

Anon, stayed: October 2017

From arrival to departure we enjoyed every minute of our stay. The position is idyllic, the attitude of all staff could not be faulted, the food first class. An excellent pick-me-up for two oldies!

Never Again.

Christine M, Lancashire, stayed: September 2017

We regularly stay in the South Hams and have done for years. We stay in hotels or hire cottages. We were attracted to Buckland Tout-Saints because it was advertised in the Daily Telegraph. It was a £295 mistake and we left a day early.  We got to the hotel via a tortuous route but no matter, we're used to this in Devon. I must tell you we are not fussy people and never complain. We were asked if we required a newspaper and said we would like the Telegraph. We had vouchers but they wouldn't accept them. Ok fair enough but nothing to cry about. Then we were taken up into the attic to what might be described as a bedroom.
I said to the young woman it looks like we've been shoved in the 'deal' room. A tiny room with a wash stand in it. Looked in the tiny bathroom where there was a shower over the bath and no shower curtains.  Ridiculous!. Called the young woman back who saw it and said something like 'Never noticed that before and moved us after we repacked to yet another tiny attic room, this time with a tiny cubicle. Tiny room hardly enough to sit on the toilet and we are both not overweight. Unhygenic if you require bathroom at night and have to disturb partner when washing hands in the bedroom wash stand.  No tea or coffee in the new bedroom. Lady who came up was very nice but mortified.  Went into the bar. Had to ring bell for service. No draft beer. Ordered gin and tonic, no lemon or like offered. You may think that a lot of this is petty but when it's a succession of things going wrong it gets on your nerves after what we had forked out. Dinner was nothing to write home about. Beautifully cooked fish but small portions. Ravioli not very well cooked (over cooked) and again small portion.  Breakfast the following morning was nice but nothing more. It was at this point we decided to leave early when we had found another hotel to take us at short notice thankfully so we put it down to bad experience and wrote off our losses. The morning staff tried to persuade us to stay in a better room. Sorry, should have done it earlier. Never Again.  I have never written a review like this. We will go back to South Devon and do it ourselves in future.  Thank you and I hope they take note and knock those silly attic rooms into one.

Nice dog friendly hotel but some challenges for these OAPs

GW, Somerset, stayed: June 2017

Nice hotel with friendly staff, but beware of the extremely narrow lanes leading to and from the location, and the absence of a lift if your room is on the top floor.

Love that you're dog friendly.

SS, West Sussex, stayed: June 2017

Lovely stay in the beautiful Buckland Tout Saints. A few windy country roads to negotiate before you get there, but worth it. The setting is stunning and the reception rooms have an elegance from years gone by. Thank you so much for being so welcoming to our pooch. It is not easy to find a nice hotel that doesn't impose all sorts of restrictions. Only hitch was that our room was completely forgotten one day, not cleaned, bed not made which is a first anywhere in the world for us!

Excellent staff we were made to feel very welcome by everyone. Nothing was too much trouble. Everyone had a great sense of humour which really counts. Not a scrap of pretention. Thank you so much.
