Balbirnie House - Country House Hotel

Balbirnie House image
Balbirnie House is a delightful Georgian mansion house dating back to 1777. The house was commissioned by The Balfour family who had lived on the site since 1642 in a previously existing house.

The Balfours were an influential agricultural and coal mining family from the Fife area who decided it was time to create a superior house to that which had originally sat on the site.

Originally designed by John Nisbet in 1777 and then extended by Robert Crichton in 1815, the building is now listed Grade A of architectural and historical importance and is most probably one of the largest and earliest Grecian style houses to be built in Scotland.

The house is the centrepiece of a 416 acre estate and country park, landscaped in the style of Capability Brown, which includes specimen trees and a collection of rhododendrons unrivalled in the East of Scotland.

Views from the house extend over garden lawns, picturesque flowering borders and trimmed yew hedges to woodland walks, and also to Balbirnie Park golf course, an undulating and scenic par 71 challenge which surrounds the house and estate.

Also within the park is Balbirnie craft centre, housed in the old stable block. The craft centre comprises a collection of local craftsmen selling jewellery, pottery, glassworks, pictures and leather goods.

Balbirnie House is a stunning 4 star country hotel perfect for that luxury hotel break in Scotland, and the hotel is also close to St Andrews and Edinburgh is just 35 miles away.
