History of the hotel

The Manor of Bassenthwaite (where the Hall now stands) was given to the illegitimate brother of Allan, the Second Lord of Allerdale and Gospatrick took on the name de Bassenthwaite. Another family, the Highmore family, who owned the Hall 1540 to 1748, offered hospitality to the infamous Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Duke of Cumberland during the 1745 uprising at their other residence in Carlisle. In 1748 James Spedding, Squire to Lord Egremont of Cockermouth Castle acquired the Hall and it stayed in his family for three generations until it was sold to Sir Frederick Fletcher-Vane in 1796. This family extended the Hall in 1817 by building a courtyard, a chapel and partially extending the building towards the lake. Four generations of the Fletcher-Vane family resided here until 1850 when it was sold to Mr. Boustead.

Luxury lakeside hotel

CJ, Staffordshire, stayed: May 2019

Thoroughly enjoyed an overnight stay to celebrate a 90th birthday! Staff were extremely helpful and friendly, fabulous food eaten with views over the lake. Beautiful grounds to enjoy, and the outside hot tub was amazing - our birthday girl thoroughly enjoyed her first hot tub experience! Even the local osprey flew overhead!

A Relaxing Break After Our Wedding

We stayed at the hall for one night after our wedding and it was a beautiful setting to wind down. The spa & outdoor jacuzzi was brilliant.

4 night stay deluxe room

GW, Leicestershire, stayed: September 2018

Overall we enjoyed our stay at Armathwaite Hall with helpful and friendly staff. Food in the Lake View restaurant was in the main excellent however we found the menus too repetitive over our stay. We were surprised to have a barking dog in the next room to us considering the comparative higher cost of a deluxe room.

Wonderful stay

D&L, stayed: September 2018

From arriving to leaving we had a wonderful stay in this beautiful hotel.
This is the real deal, not some building decorated to look like the real !
The staff are amazing. The chef and kitchen staff are amazing
The restaurant and even coffee in the lounge is 1st class ( you won't get a biscuit in a generic wrapper here )
The spa is great including the outdoor jacuzzi
Every single detai, down to an envelope has been thought about carefully and well designed.
The wedding parties are away from the main bedrooms, so out of earshot, a problem in many , well designed.
Well done to the owners. We will be back.
