Hotel and spa great, let down by restaurant

I booked this hotel as a surprise for my new husband as we was having a kid free weekend. The package included dinner and a treatment.
Treatment was great, no complaints ATALL!
Dinner was tasty for meat eater but vegetarian main was poor, a piece of pastry with a chunk of beetroot, very disappointing. At dinner we was also placed right next to the service table so not only was it very noisy with the plate stacking etc but it was where the staff congregated and we heard all of the conversations, some of which was far from professional.
In the morning we went for breakfast and it was hectic. We had our order taken and my vegi breakfast was brought within 2 mins but my husbands took nearly an hour. We complained many times. The breakfast finally came out and was wrong, friend instead of poached eggs. It was sent back and the exact same breakfast was brought to my husband. We again sent this back. After the third attempt poached were given but were raw where rushed and puddle of water was left on plate... very disappointing.
We went to reception and complained... when checking out the receptionist had removed our drinks bill of 44 from the balance as a goodwill, this was much appreciated.

Anniversary weekend away from it all

We had stayed at Ashdown Park before and loved it so much we couldn't wait to come back for a special occasion. We can't fault the staff and the general atmosphere etc is truely wonderful . However, we were located a different area of the hotel to where we stayed last time and the room although very nice, clean and well appointed, was not a patch on what we had before. We also found the height and width of the side of the bath restrictive for my wife as she is only 5ft 2ins, it was rather high. The room allocations were probably due to a wedding the same day as our arrival so it's probably a good idea to check events. This also meant parking was hard to find but again the staff stepped up and offered to park the car when a space became available.
The restaurant meal was as excellent as we had remembered and the breakfast had plenty to of variety and was very good.

Excellent stay at beautiful country house

Very nice staff who make you feel very welcome. Nice room with great view over the park. Good food en great location.

A Relaxing and Beautiful place

The experience was wonderful; staff and atmosphere were calm and relaxing. The room and views were fantastic. The food was very good (Lounge meal) and the Spa facilities generally good.
The Spa Jacuzzi was out of order and the swimming pool was 'full' when we arrived, which was disappointing as we had to wait to go in. However; complimentary drinks and snacks went some way to improving this and staff were lovely.

Poor maintenance of room

Everything about the Hotel looked good until we saw our room which was dimly lit and badly maintained. Bulbs missing from lights and tap tops falling into basin - certainly not what I would have expected from a 5* Hotel. Good lighting in the room is essential for a woman to apply makeup and get dressed for a romantic evening - we had extreemly dim lights throughout the room.. The Shower was in the bath and you needed to be agile to use this - a high step into! I had to help my wife in and out of the shower.The shower was not very effective and nowadays most people use shower against bath. The restaurant was very good and the service excellent. The setting of the Hotel was just what we wanted and the countryside lovely to walk.

Bit of a letdown

The room was quite chilly on arrival. Staff had made no effort to turn on the heat. The hot water tap barely emitted a dribble of water. Lighting in the room was very dim, barely adequate for reading.  The front desk staff said that a 9pm restaurant booking couldn't be moved up because it was "fully booked." Upon arrival in the bar at 8pm, we were told there was no problem if we wanted to eat earlier. In fact, throughout the meal, the restaurant had a number of empty tables.  However, the bar and restaurant staff were excellent and attentive and the meal was quite good.

Dated room interiors carried by everything else being so good.

The furniture and finishes in the bedrooms were dated. However this was more than made up for with everything else. The bedrooms were huge; virtually a suite. The building was very attractive and in beautiful grounds. Silver service in the restaurant and excellent food. Good service and a very restfull stay.
