History of the hotel

The hotel's unique and fascinating history began in the middle of the 19th Century when popularity of both Scotland as a holiday and health destination grew amongst Victorians.

In 2001, the most extensive refurbishment of the hotel began.Over the course of a decade, locked away rooms and buildings were uncovered and restored including the historic Victorian spa and Turkish baths in the lower ground floor and the art deco building ‘Highways' . New and old gardens were carefully cultivated to award winning standards.

In 2005 the Atholl Palace Museum opened within the hotel. It was the largest of its kind in the UK, celebrating the rich history and architectural heritage of the hotel.

Location & Local Attractions

Pitlochry in the beautiful region of Perthshire is a hidden gem for travellers wishing to explore the surrounding area and beyond. With the main trunk road (A9) to Inverness and the north skirting the town and the main rail link passing through it, the town makes an ideal stopping off point or base for a truly Scottish Highland break. The pretty town of Pitlochry, many times winner of Scotland in Bloom and Britain in Bloom awards, is a gentle stroll from the Hotel. The well kept Victorian main street is filled with small, independent shops with unique merchandise and well worth a browse. The nearby small towns of Aberfeldy and Dunkeld also have a unique character and small interesting boutiques. Ten miles north is the House of Bruar, a shopping experience often described as 'the Harrods of the North'.

Pitlochry is surrounded by a variety of beautiful landscapes, from the magical forest around Loch Faskally, to the heights of Ben y Vrackie, which makes up for its lack of munro status by looking dramatic, the rolling pastures of Perthshire and the flowing rivers Tummel & Tay.

The Queen's View - said to be Queen Victoria's favourite vista, takes the breath of many visitors each year as the light changes over the shimmering loch and the great mountain, Schiehallion in the background. However, if you should tire of this pastoral feast, there are many other things to look at.

Whisky connoisseurs will enjoy visiting many of the distilleries in Perthshire and the surrounding area. In particular, there are two local distilleries in Pitlochry, the picturesque Edradour which is the smallest working distillery in Scotland and Blair Athol Distillery. Nearby in Aberfeldy is the "Dewars World of Whisky", and in Crieff, you enjoy a day out to "The Famous Grouse Experience".

Cycling: About 100 yards from the Atholl Palace entrance is  where you can hire bikes, tandems, tag-along's and any required equipment. Kevin or Malcolm will also be able to give you route maps and suggest a route which suits your abilities.

Walking: Pitlochry has walks to suit every walker with a choice of pasture or highland, riverside, woodland and open moorland.

We had a delightful stay at the Atholl Palace

Steve, stayed: March 2020

As an elderly couple in our 80s we really appreciated the disabled carparking, ramped entrance and comfortable ground floor room with wet room facilities. We recommend it highly and have already booked for a stay later in the year .

A Fave

Kathryn N Lanarkshire, stayed: January 2020

We enjoyed a return visit to Atholl Palace (been many times since 1989, before the renovations). after a hectic Christmas and New Year period. The setting, of course, is nothing short of spectacular. The history of the hotel oozes. We liked our room; my only gripe is that we had no bath. I do like a relaxing bath when staying at a hotel, especially one which promotes luxury. Our dinner was lovely but possibly less that tempted us on the menu than on previous visits. Breakfast as always, fabulous. Overall - we had a lovely stay and will return.

2nd to the 4th of January 2020

John S, stayed: January 2020

We stayed here at the beginning of January. Whereas the front of house staff were very helpful, what let the hotel down for us was the dining experience. The first morning at breakfast we were virtually ignored by the staff. My wife had to approach the waitress twice and ask for tea/coffee/toast rather than the waitress approach us , and even then she failed to explain or even direct us to the breakfast bar.
At night we had booked a table for 8:00p.m. We were not seated till 25 minutes later. No one kept us up to date with the progress of our booking, and once again we felt ignored and we noticed that guests who had not booked a time seemed to be seated ahead of us.

Having worked in the food and service industry for 40 years, our policy has always been that no matter how busy the restaurant is , our customers are always seated at their time of booking and attended to from the minute they enter till the minute they leave

Volume of customers is no excuse for a sloppy service.

However, purely on the efforts of the front of house and service staff we would stay here again , but only if we hear that the restaurant is run on a more professional basis.

Our two night break at thee Atholl Palace hotel

Margaret, Stirlingshire, stayed: October 2019

We were warmly welcomed and after the usual paper work proceeded to our bedroom on the second floor via the lift .We chose the the valley room which had two lovely windows overlooking the valley and the view was lovely with the Autumn colours .The room was warm and spacious with a separate area for the wardrobe and a smart bathroom. In the evening we went into the stag bar for a drink .not so impressed with this area .it was the only bar open and people and children were having a bar meal and it was quite cool in this area so we took our drinks into the lounge where the fire was burning brightly. The dining room was good with a good choice of menu and the staff were very pleasant and helpful .Breakfast in the morning had plenty to chose from and the staff again were excellent

Good but spoiled

Anon, stayed: October 2019

Overall, our stay was good relative to the cost. On checking out, the experience was sullied somewhat by discovering that the restaurant had overcharged us for drinks. Part of this was resolved (an extra bottle of wine added to the bill which was not ordered) but another part ( an extra drink being added to the bill was left unresolved by the receptionist. As there was a queue forming behind I left the matter but we are unlikely to return because of that.

Lack of consistency

Tim, united kingdom, stayed: October 2019

At reception we received an indifferent welcome. We returned to this hotel after 26 years and we always remembered the excellent welcome. The restaurant staff were excellent especially the manager. We had a power cut and received no advice or assurance. We felt that we were a hinderance to everyone. Breakfast was stunning and the bar was relaxing with knowledgeable and friendly staff. Not the wonderful experience we expected.
