Billesley Manor

Anon, stayed: May 2019

On day of arrival there was a wedding going on in the grounds. Upon check in we mentioned our concerns about possible noise from an evening disco. We were assured that it would not impact on our stay in anyway.
We checked into our room to see that the wedding guests were directly under our window.
After a pleasant evening we retired for the night to hear the disco loud enough to actually hear not just the thud but the words that were being sung. It carried on until 12.20 am. For the guests to then continue singing outside our bedroom window.
We were unfortunate to have been put in a family room with interconnecting room So ,so when the guest returned to there room next to us, we were woken again with another party at 3.20 am.
Finally managed some sleep and went down stairs the next morning for breakfast. There were no staff to greet us and were told by other guests to help ourselves to the very basic breakfast buffet. After sitting down to eat a waitress appeared and asked if we would like tea or coffee in which we ordered both,I had noticed that the milk jug on our table was dirty from previous guest so I asked for it to be changed. The waitress reappeared 5 minutes later with a very dirty tea and coffee pot ,and when I pointed it out she said it was stained rubbed some off with her finger,I asked for it to be changed. Waited a few more minutes and the same pot of coffee tea and the milk jug came back which had just been wiped as the marmite was still on the milk jug.
I expected much higher standards in this hotel from customer service and food hygiene.
Certainly would not recommend this hotel or stay there again.

Nice hotel spoiled by some issues.

JT, Cardiff, stayed: May 2019

A generally enjoyable three night stay spoiled by the dinner table d hote menu remaining unchanged throughout and and poor housekeeping service.
Also: look out for the unmentioned daily service charge added to your bill, plus other errors; don t be shy, have them removed!

Could have been better

GW, Norfolk, stayed: May 2019

The hotel location was good. On approach well kept grounds complimented the attractive face of the manor. Parking was easy and you could drive up to the reception area in order to unload your luggage.

The public rooms on the ground floor were in good order and attractive. The Spa was not available, the re-opening having been delayed. Workmen were in evidence as the hotel was undergoing refurbishment of the Spa, which we had been informed about when making the booking. However approximately half of the front of the building was covered in scaffolding which we did not know about.

The first room we were allocated was probably the furthest away from the reception of all the available rooms, it being a difficult journey navigating one's way through winding corridors and stairways many of which were quite narrow,. This reflected the compromises of the conversion of the building which dated back to the 16th century so don't expect a light and airy route to the rooms in the main building. On entering our room we noted it was very dark but when opening the curtains (kept closed because of the hot sunny weather) things did not improve much as there was a significant volume of scaffolding directly outside the window. I expressed my disappointment back at reception and was allocated a scaffold free room with dual aspect windows which was much lighter.

The room was big and so was the bathroom. The carpet was tired being quite threadbare adjacent to the bed. We also had two light coloured sofas in the room both of which were very grubby but otherwise not tired or unduly worn. A professional clean may well have brought them up to a reasonable standard. The bathroom was clean. The bed and bedding were of good quality but some of the other elements would benefit from upgrading. It was noted that there was evidence of minor water ingress at a few spots near the ceiling which no doubt the refurbishment will sort out although the room did not smell damp.

The dinning room and staff were fine, and food was efficiently delivered with a minimum of delay. The quality of the food in the evening was good and maybe a little above average.

Overall the stay was OK but marred by the grubby sofas in our room. We would be unlikely to return to this hotel unless we knew that the refurbishments included updating of the bedrooms.

Billesley has so much going for it, but....

JH, Staffordshire, stayed: May 2019

When we stayed, there was building / renovation work and scaffolding over much of the left side of the house. We already knew the Spa was out of use. Our Superior room was up two flights of very narrow stairs and overlooked the scaffolding with builders walking past the window. We requested and got a replacement room in the Main House.Dinner was excellent; faultless service. However, breakfast was a completely different matter. Although we sat at a table in the restaurant, the food was all self service from the bar area, queuing for hot food laid out in trays canteen style. No menu. Even the toast was via the machine- similar to those seen abroad. The builders also joined us for breakfast. All very disappointing. Billesley needs to think about where it wants to pitch itself - it could be so much better !

Lovely hotel, but in need of some TLC

Colin B, West Yorkshire, stayed: May 2019

Historic and beautiful building in a wonderful setting. Staff were very obliging, breakfast and dinner were very good, although the dinner menu was the same on both nights and very limited in choice, but everything was well presented and delicious. Whilst we were there the spa was being renovated and not available to guests, but we were expecting this as we had been informed well before our stay, and it didn't affect is at all. The hotel is charming, full of character, and comfortable. Whilst lacking the sophistication and some of the amenities of more modern hotels, it more than compensated for this with its undeniable character and the efficiency and warmth of its staff. We would happily book the hotel next time we are staying in the area.
