History of the hotel

The Borrowdale Hotel has been taking guests since 1866 and was one of the first coaching inns built in the Borrowdale valley, remaining a favourite for returning guests ever since. The Graves family bought the hotel in 2008 starting a new era in the hotel's history. Many old features still exist in the hotel, most notably the old bells opposite the reception.

Child Policy

Children aged 2-15 sharing a room with 2 full paying adults will be charged a maximum of £25.00 per child per night, including breakfast.

All children's evening meals are charged as taken from either the children's menu or the restaurant menu.

Family suites may be available in certain hotels, please contact our team for rates and availability.

Dogs Policy

The Borrowdale Hotel understands that dogs are part of the family and many owners like to take their dog with them on holiday.  Dogs can stay in all but 2 bedrooms, up to two dogs per room.  There are outside areas for exercising dogs and they are permitted in the bar and lounges. Dog beds and bowls are also available on request so you don't have to fill the car with all the extra baggage.

Rest assured that the bedrooms are cleaned to a very high standard so if you're not a dog person you won't even know there's been one in the room!

Dogs are charged at £10 per dog per night.

The grounds

The gardens were created at the same time as the hotel and the Cherry and Magnolia trees, planted the same year, can still be seen today. "Rarely do they both flower at the same time but it seems that the Magnolia tree has quite a following" said Kit Graves, Director. "In April and May we have quite a few lunchtime visitors who come specially to see the Magnolia in bloom. While it never flowers for long, it is a beautiful sight while it does!".

Warm and welcoming week at The Borrowdale Hotel!

Pat F, Essex, stayed: November 2018

From the moment we arrived at the Borrowdale Hotel I felt like I was wrapped in a big warm blanket. I was given a voucher by our children to pick an hotel as my 70th birthday present. I am so glad that I picked The Borrowdale. The hotel itself is gorgeous. Extra special was that it had already been decorated for the Christmas season! Staff are all so helpful and polite, the room luxurious with a lake view and the menu new each night and delicious. Thank you! Perfect stay.

Reception staff perhaps require an update in hospitality training.

Dissapointed, stayed: August 2018

Reception staff looked extremely fed up, assumed we would want to eat evening meal in the bar even though we were dressed for dinner & didn't have a dog with us??
No lift!! Breakfast good but dinner inadequate, tiny amount so sorry for anyone who is hungry after walking. Room clean but very small. Wouldn't stay again.

Anon, stayed: March 2018

First night, poor service in restaurant, slow and no attention from staff.  Dessert was inedible, as it was raw (eggs not cooked properly). For the next two nights, service in the restaurant was much improved and back to the level expected at the Borrowdale. Rooms were very clean and tidy. Attitude of the barman was questionable, a tad surly and inhospitable. A smile would have been appreciated! Reception staff were very helpful, and printed off local items from the internet,
