Relaxing stay

Irene H, Devon, stayed: August 2019

The hotel is set down some very narrow roads but there are a few passing places. Our room was disappointing as it was very dark and at the back of the hotel where you could hear the fan from the kitchen until late at night and running/dripping water constantly all through the night. Saying this we were able to see into a couple of rooms which overlooked the gardens which were light and airy . I would ask for one of these rooms in future. It s very dog friendly and your dog can be with you in one of the restaurants. They even offered our dog a sausage at breakfast. The food is outstanding and beautifully presented.

Beautiful location

PR, Hampshire, stayed: July 2019

Enjoyed our stay. Beautiful hotel and scenery but nothing else local. Best scones ever. Small portions in restaurant. Our room was quite cramped with small window so a bit disappointing but great value deal.

JC, Devon, stayed: July 2019

A very pleasant small hotel. We had, sadly, only one night on this occasion, but will stay longer next time. Staff were friendly and helpful; food was exceptionally good and the room was clean and comfortable. A pity that the grounds are not better maintained: many shrubs of interest are swamped by brambles and there is little other planting.

A lovely hotel rather isolated but in a beautiful location.

Sally B, Dorset, stayed: July 2019

My partner and myself had a lovely break the hotel was steeped in history, one could almost imagine that you were living in a bygone age and visiting a country house. The hotel being very old was full of creeks and noises. Our bedroom which was in the attic, had lots of character and there were lots of 'nice touches' with the toiletries and teas/coffee supplied of a high standard.

The isolated location meant that it was difficult to go out in the evening but that did not bother us, it might do if you had teenage children. During the day there were lots of interesting places to visit and i would certainly recommend a trip up the river Dart.

I would certainly recommend this hotel to anybody looking for a peaceful break for a few days.

Buckland Tout Saints

GH, West Sussex, stayed: June 2019

Hotel is approached by an appx 2 mile single track road which like many Devon roads needs to be negotiated with care.

Hotel is one in a small chain, very friendly welcome and nice ambience. Room well appointed but very dark as to the side of the hotel looking out over a steep bank which blocked out much of the light. not a major problem. High quality cuisine especially breakfasts which we thought were excellent. Evening menu a bit short on choice but beautifully served, beautifully presented. Thought the prices including the. majority,of the wine list were on the high side. A house wine for 25 would have to be extraordinary to justify this price tag.

The booking via OPL is really the difference between an OK rating for value and the good rating I've given. We haven't stayed in this area before so have not been able to make any real comparisons so there would have to be a good reason to go back again any time soon and have , for us, a more arduous journey. Despite that, no complaints, felt welcome.

Fantastic location for peace and relaxation

Shelley, Somerset, stayed: June 2019

Great service, location and the food was amazing
My only criticism would be the hotel needs updating with the suite we stayed in. Furnishings and bathroom and the outside could do with a lick of paint
The service was outstanding and the staff were attentive
