History of the hotel

Built in 1925, this was the first hotel at Carlyon Bay and was originally called the St Austell Bay Hotel. The hotel quickly became a fashionable choice with movie stars and celebrities and was frequented by a famous Royal visitor, Edward, then Prince of Wales, and his future wife, Mrs Wallis Simpson.

The building suffered a devastating fire in 1931. Locals who rushed to the scene to help were met with the sight of furniture being frantically thrown from the windows to save it from the flames.

During the war years, two boys' schools from Canterbury, The Kings' School and St Edmund's, were evacuated to the hotel to escape the Blitz. In March 1944, General Montgomery came to the hotel to inspect the schools' cadet force. (In April 2015, a special 70th Anniversary Reunion was hosted at the hotel for the surviving evacuees and their partners.)

There was considerable excitement when Sir Winston Churchill stayed at the hotel with his wife Clementine in 1953.

In 1982, the Carlyon Bay Hotel became part of the Brend Group and since then, the Brend family have continually invested in improving the facilities at both the hotel and its fine championship golf course. This has led to Carlyon Bay Hotel winning the Conde Nast Johannsens Award for Excellence in 2013. More recently, Brend Group itself was named Hotel Group of the Year 2015-2016 in the AA Hospitality Awards.

Location & Local Attractions

One of the advantages of our stunning coastal location in St Austell is that it puts you within easy reach of the very best that Cornwall has to offer. The world famous Eden Project is just minutes away. When you are planning what to do and where to visit, here are just a few of our favourites:

In the very next bay to us is the historic harbour of Charlestown, which has featured prominently in the BBC’s Poldark series; a few miles to the east is the stunning estuary town of Fowey, where Daphne du Maurier kept a home for many years; Falmouth stands on one of the largest natural harbours in the world and has a superb Maritime Museum; the famous Land's End is not to be missed, and nearby are the gorgeous blue waters of Sennen Cove;  Marazion has sweeping views across to St Michael's Mount; Newquay has world-class surfing beaches; Tintagel Castle is steeped in Arthurian legend ; Padstow is home to Rick Stein's famous fish restaurant;  Cornwall's county town of Truro has a lovely cathedral and fascinating shops; and St Ives features Cornwall's very own Tate Gallery and has a beauty that has inspired artists from all over the world.

October celebration break

KJ, Devon, stayed: October 2018

We stayed as a family party of four adults for a long weekend. The hotel is classic in style and atmosphere, but beautifully maintained, warm and welcoming. Staff in all departments are friendly, efficient and extremely helpful. If you require something service is speedy, but otherwise you are left to relax and enjoy the facilities untroubled. Food is excellent with a choice of eating options and menus. The spa, pools and golf facilities are outstanding. Real luxury is a heated outdoor pool available in October! It was an excellent, much needed and good value break and we all hope to return.

Outstanding location; extremely comfortable; welcoming and friendly staff at all levels.

Anon, stayed: May 2018

We found the table d' hote menu slightly unimaginative, and the mark-up on the wines excessive eg a bottle of Beajolais- Village at 30 when the price in a privately owned wine merchant is 10.50 (at M&S it is 8.10) Apart from that we have nothing but praise.
