Great location but hotel could be better

Trevor H, Dumfriesshire, stayed: July 2019

On arriving at the hotel you are immediately impressed by its location and the look of its surroundings, but then you enter into reception to be greeted not by just welcoming reception staff but by tablets were you need to register yourself. Unfortunately the software is unfriendly and confusing so you end up with a receptionist standing next to you advising you what to type in. It was very deflating and as we went up to our rooms we were beginning to wonder if we'd made the right choice for our 25th wedding anniversary celebrations. We then had further concerns as we sat down for dinner and started to eat the food. It was very bland, with not one of our party of four saying they really enjoyed it. We had planned to have our anniversary celebration in the hotels 'gourmet ' restaurant but after our experience on the first night cancelled the reservation and rushed into town to find a suitable alternative. The other issue we experience was that the promised box of chocolates that should have been in the room didn't appear until the last evening, despite us being told on the first morning that someone had been despatched into town to buy some.
When it came to check out both couples were advised by reception that there was nothing to pay, and that it was covered by the booking company. We couldn't believe this, so being honest people queried it a couple of times and eventually they decided that there were some extras to pay. The amounts were calculated by us all searching the two pages or so of the bills to spot extra items.
In summary it was a bit of a shambles, and as we loved Harrogate, when we return we will stay somewhere else.

Mid week stay

Anon, stayed: May 2019

The hotel is of a very high standard and staff are very helpful and welcoming
The room was very good and everything was very clean , the bed was very comfortable
It is bad though that you have to pay for car park!
The restaurant was in a fine room and the menu was ok but lacked imagination
There was not that much choice
As we have a dog , we would also prefer the hotel to accept dogs , which at present it doesn t t
We have been to hotels even more luxurious than this and they accept dogs
This is what would make us hesitate in returning to this hotel , perhaps this issue and that of the car park can be sorted out in the near future

Neither unhappy nor excited in Harrogate

JB East Lothian, stayed: April 2019

Cedar Court is a large historic hotel with large public rooms. Excellent for receptions or conferences not quite so easy for individuals or couples. We were the only people having dinner in the massive dining room.
The staff were helpful and friendly, the bedroom spacious, clean and comfortable, breakfast was an excellent buffet. The dinner menu was limited and rather unexciting. The location is pleasant overlooking open common and is an easy walk to the town centre. Like the dinner the hotel is quite acceptable but a rather unexceptional experience overall.
