History of the hotel

The first mention of a dwelling on the current site comes from 1698 when it was reportedly owned "by a merchant from Grave's End".  In 1706 it came to be occupied by a local family with roots in the village dating back to the 1500's.

Over the years various renovations and additions were made, including the planting of the grove of fir trees that gave the house the name Combe Grove.

The house on the hill

John Hathway, Herts, stayed: March 2016

We have just had a few nights tucked away in a wonderful location at the top of a beautiful hill, overlooking a gorgeous valley. We were warmly greeted in the main Manor house and treated to a lovely pot of tea in the main sitting room. The friendly receptionist then walked us around the corner to our room, which was at ground level, so we could park just a few feet away, making life extremely easy.
After settling into the comfortable, and extremely stylish, room we opened the front door and enjoyed a sip of champers on our own private patio, watching the buzzards circling overhead.
Later, in the evenings we strolled over to the lovely restaurant to be greeted by the fantastically professional staff - then enjoyed what was possibly the best food we have come across in decades. If it hasn't got a Michelin star ... then it soon will have. Amazing food.
Each morning we opted for breakfast in the room, delivered at exactly the correct time, without fail. The breakfasts did not disappoint either - just superb.
We walked around the estate and could see that the owners are making many improvements to the grounds and property, even the Orangery was having it's ceiling re-gold leafed!
I cannot recommend the Combe Grove highly enough. Magical.

Lovely stay at Combe Grove.

Anon, stayed: March 2016

We stayed in one of the higher Garden Rooms which was very spacious, beautifully decorated and clean (also up 40 steps which could be a problem if one was less mobile!) Each of these rooms has a private balcony and outdoor seating which would be lovely in warmer weather to enjoy the wonderful views over open countryside.
All the staff were delightful, polite and eager to make our stay enjoyable.

Nice on the inside! A Work in progress

Debbie T, stayed: March 2016

Location: Relatively easy to find. Situated about 3 miles outside the City centre up steep hills close to bath university, a taxi into the City is approximately £10 each way. If you want to catch a bus apparently it's a 30 minute walk to the main entrance and bus stop, parking is limited in the City itself. Information is sparse at the hotel and the guest information folder is not accurate although this may have be rectified now but best to ask regarding tourist stuff.

1st appearance: Not quite what you expect when you drive in, a mish mash of various buildings not very well maintained on the outside, the car park is situated at the back of the main house and this is the main hub of the hotel.  Reception is just inside the back entrance to the main house and consists of a small desk and 1 chair, receptionist was lovely with excellent customer service skills.  This building is also home to 9 guest bedrooms the small dining room and lounge area, you have to come out of the front door turn left and go down a steep outside stairwell into the basement to gain acsess to the bar bistro area.

The Restaurant: The main dining room is compact and privacy is not an option, however the food is amazing both breakfast and dinner were superb on both days, staff are attentive and well organised.  The lounge opposite the dining room is comfortable but lacks ambience. All areas were spotlessly clean.

The Bar: Situated down in the basement of the main house accessible via outside staircase, although newly refurbished it is not in keeping with the rest of the house more like a cafeteria than a bar, service was poor and drinks availability was sparse, only bottled beers and not much choice. Not somewhere you would want to spend the evening very disappointing.

Spa/ Country club: Situated in yet another building opposite the back of the main house, looked OK on the inside but busy with lots of non residents, didn't use the facilities so can't really comment. Decor In need of an update I don't think there is a bar or if there is we were not told about it?

Rooms: Housed in a separate building a few minutes walk from the main house, access is via some steep steps and there is no ramp you have to carry your own bags, the main doors are in a sorry state and do not give a good 1st impression, rooms are on 2 floors no lift available so again bags need to be carried, we had 2 rooms on the 2nd floor both had recently been refurbished and although a bit garish for my taste both were spotlessly clean with comfortable beds, power shower, TV, Wifi, tea & coffee facilities, hairdryer, iron & ironing board, we also had beautiful views over the countryside.  The beauty treatments and conference facilities are also housed in this building but I did not use them as there was no available slots so cannot comment.

Overall: Not an average Country house, lacks the luxury feel and appearance but has excellent food and customer service, facilities spread out over several buildings and public areas lack ambience, lots of steps and stairways so would not recommend for those with walking difficulties. Spotlessly clean rooms with all usual amenities, OPL extras included bottle Champagne in each room use of spa, pool etc. No single occupant supplement so well worth booking through them. Stayed 2 nights Dinner Bed and Breakfast.

Luxury Stay for 8 Ladies

Carol, Ceredigion, stayed: April 2016

We had a beautiful stay but unfortunately one lady had a disappointing stay.  She's a vegetarian and they only had one choice on the menu both nights.  She booked a spa treatment and was told she had come at the wrong time the first day when she had the email confirmation to say she was at the right time so she didn't get that treatment.  The next day she had her Full Body treatment but was refused her 10% discount as per our booking.  Several phone calls and she still hasn't had it.  We won't go back.
I went there with my husband 2 years ago and we had a wonderful time.  So disappointed

Wonderful position

Christine, Hants, stayed: April 2016

We had a wonderfully quiet break with fabulous views over the Bath countryside. Well appointed rooms except no razor point in the bathroom. The only downside is I took my 90 year old mother and the only place for breakfast was down a steep flight of stone stairs and there was no lift access. If she had not been able to get down them we would have had to have our breakfast in the room and there was not enough space for us both to sit with a table to have breakfast at.

Otherwise I would thoroughly recommend the hotel. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful and the food was superb. They have a young chef who I understand has won awards and we both looked forward to the dinner each night very much.

Definitely a place to return to

GN, stayed: April 2016

We were pleasantly surprised with our weekend stay at Combe Grove. The recent refurbishment has been done in a tasteful manner and some bold and quirky finishings can been seen throughout the lounge and bar areas. Our room was comfortable, the meals in the restaurant were superb and the staff were all very helpful and friendly. The gym and pool area together with the changing rooms are, we understand, under review and subject to further work but were nevertheless adequate enough facilities for our stay. The location is peaceful with rather a long, but most enjoyable, walk into Bath
