Perfect short break

AS, Northamptonshire, stayed: August 2019

We had 2 days in a Junior Suite for our Silver Wedding Anniversary. The room was lovely, both meals in the Bistro and The Ivy were excellent, as was the service. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will definitely be back.

Charming hotel in Cotswold town

SB, Wiltshire, stayed: July 2019

The Cotswold House Hotel was perfect for a girly break with friends or a romantic weekend for two. The location was perfect with lots to see in and around the area. The hotel staff were extremely welcoming and helpful and the food was generally excellent. The spa was some way from the hotel which was fine in good weather but wouldn't be much fun in the winter. The Bistro was good value but we were slightly disappointed with the Fig restaurant - not much choice and one disappointing meal. Our room had no shower which was somewhat annoying in the hot weather as the bath ran extremely slowly. Overall though an excellent stay in a lovely hotel.

Almost but not quite

Anon, stayed: July 2019

Having twice stayed at sister hotel the Noel Arms, I thought it would be nice to move up a level and book in Cotswold House for a couple of nights. Though there were differences, I am not sure they were sufficient to make me want to use Cotswold House again, in preference.

Of particular concern was accessibility for a wheelchair user. We had a member of our party who primarily uses a wheelchair to get around. I had mentioned this when making the booking. I had been offered one of the outside cottage rooms but was then told that the room we actually took was up "a few stairs" which would have been manageable. When we arrived, we saw that the room was on th first floor and there are at least twenty steps, with a shaky bannister to hold on to. We coped, but only just.

No doubt due to the age of the building, moving about the ground floor, and accessing the WC beyond the bar, also proved a challenge. Ultimately, therefore, I would say you should avoid this hotel if you need a wheelchair.

On a more general level, things were fine, but not stunningly so. Staff varied, with some very good and attentive, whilst others may have been on a school work experience day. I would put that down to leadership - there was no sense that everyone worked as a team or that there was a common business message underpinning everything. It appeared fairly quiet whilst we were there, so maybe everyone was saving their energy for a big wedding at the weekend?

Food overall was good, though the "short rib" was disappointing. Thankfully, the head waiter took careful note of my comments about this, as I believe it was a recent addition to the menu.

So, whilst there was nothing bad, the goods weren't quite good enough to get five stars.

Won't be going Back

David C, Warwickshire, stayed: May 2019

A one night stay was for my 60th birthday, i am so gutted for my lovely husband who spent all that money on one night which was a massive disappointment. The lad that greeted us was ok, showed us to our cottage and how to operate the hot tub, unfortunately there was no canopy or gazebo or anything so we couldn't use the hot tub because it was hail stones, there was no way we could sit in it. went to the restaurant where we were challenged on how we liked our steak cooked, because rump was the only steak they had, we asked for well done, he came back and said it would be 20 mins should he bring us some bread, we were brought pitta bread with balsamic/oil and two rolls which were clearly frozen part baked not fresh. The male only staff were all cold, no banter or chat, no one smiled. We were given a complimentary glass of Prosecco, we expected to find two mini bottles in our room, no, we were given a voucher at reception to hand to the bar, how tacky is that.
I think as we are in England it would be nice to have a canopy so if the weather turns bad you can still sit out in it, or offer an alternative maybe in the spa if you cannot use the hot tub, to spend over 400 on one night in a average room is a rip off in this country, we paid for an upgrade we couldn't use, i would also suggest the bottles of prosecco in the rooms not a voucher, and biscuits that are still wrapped, not just four biscuits put in a glass jar.
