Weekend Treat with friends
Fantastic evening, dining and breakfast next day at Gorse Hill Hotel with friends.
Disappointed
We had to wait a long time to be booked in and the the room we were offered which was meant to be deluxe was small, by the gym with handicapped facilities. Overlooking a broken wall with a temporary fence and a n old wheelbarrow and rubbish.
Eventually given a better room. Dinner menu on website offered three courses for 24.99, this did not exist.
Courses were expensive but food was good.
Dining staff were friendly and service relatively prompt.
Wasn't happy to have a service charge automatically added and prefer to tip on merit.
Unable to explore grounds as very boggy.
We were initially charged on leaving for what should have been our free welcome drink and had to querie it.
We managed to contract a particularly horrid case of covid during our stay. Wonder if cleaning was up to scratch.

Lively hotel and staff
As the title says. I have a lovely stay and felt very welcome
More hype than substance
Breakfast was good. Dinner wasn t.
Very dearly priced for the services offered.
A tiny bottle of water in the room.
Beds were uncomfortable.
There is nothing much to do in or near the hotel.
Pleasant hotel in a nice spot
Gorse Hill is a rambling house in a lovely spot, but it needs some tlc, as it looks very shabby. Inside it's fresh but rather gloomy in places.
I found the loud music from their wedding venue, which is only a stones throw from the main house, annoying, as it went on till after midnight.
Staff were helpful and nice, mostly.
Not overwhelmingly good but a nice enough stay.

Too much based on a conference/wedding facility. Not what I would regard as a 'country hotel'. Room was poor and dated for the cost and hype. The carpet was dirty and the facilities very tired. Front of house was excellent, although the restaurant was not cheap once the 10% charge had been added. .
Mid-week break.
On arrival, the location was stunning. Grand house and beautiful grounds. Unfortunately the over-all service did not quite match up. I concluded that Gorse Hill is more driven by appearances than detail.
It is not an in-expensive hotel so guests have every right to expect commensurate facilities. Our room was quite small; not well designed; and with certain essentials missing. For example, there is no plug for the hair dryer which is in reach of a mirror; there is no towel rack so damp towels need to be hung anywhere you can find space; the windows are constrained to open about three inches because of the blinds, only one chair in room for two; very limited drawer space; only four coat hangers; a wardrobe cluttered by ironing board. spare pillows etc.; no handrail to aid anyone needing to climb in or out of the bath/shower. I could go on.
It just seems that the day to day facilities around the hotel are not regularly checked with the needs of guests in mind. It's all down to detail - and I found Gorse Hill seriously lacking in this department.
All that said, the staff were great. Cheerful and helpful, despite the odds.
We ate-in for the three days we stayed and at a rough cost of 250 per day I have stayed at many better hotels at less the cost.
