History of the hotel

It was in 1879 that William Moore, a prominent architect and builder from Exeter built the impressive mansion from stone quarried from within the estate.
Highbullen is a fine example of the architecture that emerged from the "Arts and Crafts" movement.  It is easy to see the influence of Philip Webb, who is often referred to as the father of the "Arts and Crafts" architecture.  The solid, well proportioned forms, steep roofs and deep porches of Highbullen are all typical of Webb's style and the intriguing marble fireplace in the drawing room is of particular note.  Highbullen remained the Moore family's home for over 40 years.

Jumping forward to World War Two a new and exciting chapter opened in Highbullen's history.  The substantial ground floor rooms became classrooms when a private school was evacuated there and during this time the grounds were maintained by German prisoners of war.

How to get here

It is easy to find the hotel near Barnstaple, at the very heart of North Devon. From the M5, leave at junction 27 and take the A361 towards Barnstaple. After about 20 miles of lovely driving across Exmoor, at the Bish Mill roundabout, turn left onto the B3227 towards South Molton.

Progress through South Molton and towards the end of the High Street bear left onto the B3226. Follow this road along the Mole Valley for about 5 miles until you see the brown sign for Highbullen Hotel, taking the right turn, up the valley.

At the top of the hill, turn left following the brown sign to the hotel and the signpost to Chittlehamholt. Go carefully through the village of Chittlehamholt and you will find the entrance to Highbullen Hotel on the left just after you leave the village.

Our review for Highbullen Hotel

Joanna B, Devon, stayed: January 2020

We had an absolutely wonderful stay at Highbullen Hotel, couldn t fault it, we arrived and got upgraded to The Loft Suite, which was a lovely surprise and totally unexpected, and it was very luxurious. The food was outstanding, we made full use of leisure facilities , well equipped gym and nice pool and jacuzzi. All the staff were friendly and welcoming and nothing was too much trouble. The hotel is in a great location, out in the middle of nowhere away from the hustle and bustle of life, definitely a place to go to and get away from it all. We will definitely be returning. Offpeak luxury.com is a fantastic website with great offers

Lovely devon hotel

PG, West Sussex, stayed: October 2019

Lovely hotel set in beautifull devon countryside.Staff were friendly and helpfull and restaurant food excellent.Could not comment on spa/golf as did not use.The only downside was the narrow lanes leading to the hotel which could prove a problem in winter. However the location of the hotel made up for that !

Overnight stop

JP, Somerset, stayed: June 2019

Would have preferred to have been in main hotel but we were told beforehand we would be in a separate block. Wonderful views from the restaurant. Evening meal was nice but breakfast not so good, asked for full breakfast but with a vegetarian sausage, for some reason got no bacon, black pudding or hash brown, waitress went to sort out with kitchen, when they arrived, hash brown still frozen in the middle, black pudding not cooked properly, did tell the waitress who apologised but spoiled the meal. The staff in the restaurant seemed not particularly interested or happy. This was more apparent as we had 2 further nights in another hotel close by where the whole ambience at mealtimes was much more welcoming and friendly.

Relaxing break in the country

Martin, stayed: April 2019

My wife and I stayed here on DBB deal and stayed in a room overlooking the countryside (Deer View). The room was away from the main hotel itself in a sort of concrete complex but was comfortable, however the bathroom was a bit small and disappointing in comparison to the size of the room; I expected a decent shower but instead there was rather a small bath with a shower hose and very weak water pressure. The water wasn't very hot either. That's the worst bit of this review out the way. The rest was lovely. The food in the restaurant was exceptional, the staff very friendly and the spa facilities pretty good too - a decent sized pool for once! The changing rooms were a bit dated but not bad. Beautiful grounds and a wonderful view from the gardens surrounding the hotel. Would we stay again? Yes, definitely, but next time I will try to ask if they have rooms with any decent water pressure!
