History of the hotel

It was in 1879 that William Moore, a prominent architect and builder from Exeter built the impressive mansion from stone quarried from within the estate.
Highbullen is a fine example of the architecture that emerged from the "Arts and Crafts" movement.  It is easy to see the influence of Philip Webb, who is often referred to as the father of the "Arts and Crafts" architecture.  The solid, well proportioned forms, steep roofs and deep porches of Highbullen are all typical of Webb's style and the intriguing marble fireplace in the drawing room is of particular note.  Highbullen remained the Moore family's home for over 40 years.

Jumping forward to World War Two a new and exciting chapter opened in Highbullen's history.  The substantial ground floor rooms became classrooms when a private school was evacuated there and during this time the grounds were maintained by German prisoners of war.

There are 6 family rooms available and children are welcome to dine in the Cellars Bar

How to get here

It is easy to find the hotel near Barnstaple, at the very heart of North Devon. From the M5, leave at junction 27 and take the A361 towards Barnstaple. After about 20 miles of lovely driving across Exmoor, at the Bish Mill roundabout, turn left onto the B3227 towards South Molton.

Progress through South Molton and towards the end of the High Street bear left onto the B3226. Follow this road along the Mole Valley for about 5 miles until you see the brown sign for Highbullen Hotel, taking the right turn, up the valley.

At the top of the hill, turn left following the brown sign to the hotel and the signpost to Chittlehamholt. Go carefully through the village of Chittlehamholt and you will find the entrance to Highbullen Hotel on the left just after you leave the village.

Michael, West Midlands, stayed: November 2018

This was the third time we have been to the hotel and it keeps us wanting to come back again. It is in a beautiful location with spectacular views all around the property. The breakfasts in the Devon View are excellent and freshly cooked to order. The spa and golf are a big plus and with the new Laura Ashley tea room there is much to enjoy at this hotel.

1st class hotel & restaurant in every respect!

Brian K, West Midlands, stayed: October 2018

We have just returned from 3 wonderful days at Highbullen. This was our 1st stay and it exceeded our expectations. My wife & I were fortunate to have a fabulous room in the hotel with beautiful views over the Devon countryside.
The welcome was warm and efficient and we were shown to our room which was spacious with a huge bed and a lovely en suite bathroom. Lovely dressing gowns provided.
The restaurant was worthy of 2 rosettes with dinner and breakfasts beautifully presented.
We twice played the golf course which was most enjoyable, quite busy and we used the buggy on the 2nd occasion to speed up our round. It was in good condition bearing in mind the difficult summer! Not the longest course but with some tricky holes.
We did not have enough time to explore the spa and leisure facilities but could see that improvemnts are still taking place in addition to the wonderful facilities that are already in place.
We look forward to returning . One of the best hotels we have ever stayed at, in the U.K. Thanks to all the staff.

Our opinion

John S, Somerset, stayed: September 2018

Hotel ok in most respects but v.John prices for wine tarnished an otherwise enjoyable visit. Golf pleasant but course badly signposted.

Six nights at Highbullen Hotel

Cathie G, Worcestershire, stayed: August 2018

The grounds and the house are set in a really beautiful location unfortunately carry bags to the top floor (no male companion with me) was not a welcome experience. What has happened to the etiquette of looking after guests on arrival that goes beyond signing them in. I do not think there are any staff at Highbullen to carry cases etc for their female guests.
The room was disappointing when I opened the door. "Tired" best describes it with a great big stain on the carpet and mould around the window frames. Is this really a 4* hotel - not in my book.  The evening restaurant staff are well trained in serving guests, some of the breakfast staff are not.  The evening meals are good breakfast is dependent on which chef is on duty it seemed.  The swimming pool changing rooms need staff to wipe the floor periodically throughout the day as they got shabbier as the day wore on. It was relaxing with lovely views and the bed was really comfortable but 4 * - no I would class it as 3* for all the above reasons.

Excellent staff

Ann, Dorset, stayed: May 2018

We stayed at Highbullen on a 3 night break booked through Offpeak Luxury. From the outset the staff on reception made us feel very welcome and were extremely helpful dealing with any queries we had efficiently. We ate in the restaurant every night and again the staff were very friendly and proficient. The food was excellent and we had no trouble in finding something from the menu to tempt us on all three nights.

The hotel setting was very peaceful being on a golf course with fantastic views from the restaurant and we had a very relaxing stay. We would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel to friends and family and we will definitely return in the future.
