Facilities at Lainston House

Lainston House is a charming 17th century country house set among 63 acres of Hampshire parkland.

The hotel boasts it's own cookery school, SEASON, born out of great passion for food and dining. There is a fully equipped gym on site (this is unattended and access codes are available at reception) together with tennis courts.  There is an activity field is where the hotel organise fun things such as archery, motor sports, clay pigeon shooting, falconry and even duck herding. These activities must be arranged in advance of your stay but at Lainston House almost anything's possible… let your imagination fly and just ask!

Nearby enjoy a wealth of walks, cycling routes, or trout fishing on the nearby river Test.  Should the weather be inclement, retreat to the Drawing Room where you'll discover a selection of classic games, such as chess, backgammon, scrabble or monopoly, or the most up to date gaming consoles to enjoy in your room.  There is a wide selection of DVDs to view in your room, or you can pluck a book off one of our bookshelves and curl up in front of the fire with a cup (or glass!) of something gorgeous!

Lainston House is minutes away from the historic city of Winchester and only a short drive from Salisbury, Stonehenge and the New Forest.

History of the hotel

Dating back to the late 17th century, this divine country house hotel in Hampshire is noteworthy for several reasons throughout history. The house may date back to the 17th century, however the foundations show evidence of an earlier medieval dwelling. The chapel in the grounds dates from the 12th or 13th century and was a valuable asset.

The name Lainston derives from Leofwines'tun. Tun means enclosure and Leofwine was a popular name, Leof meaning 'one who is dear' and wine meaning 'a friend'. Leynestone which means 'farm of the great field' has evolved over the centuries with various spellings.

Child Policy

Children welcome. Standard rooms accommodate one extra child, family rooms up to 2 children. Bed charge is £25 for Z-beds for children up to 12 years old sharing a room with parents, breakfast is priced at £12 for children up to 12 and £21 for children older than 12. Children under 2 stay for free and cots can be provided free of charge. No children in Restaurant after 7pm. Families with children under 11 are able to dine from the relaxed bar menu in the comfort of the Drawing Room or Cedar Bar.   This is to ensure the comfort of both our families and all of our other guests.

Dogs Policy

Dogs are accepted and should not be left unattended in rooms. A normal charge is made of £30 per stay, selected rooms available. Regrettably dogs are not allowed in any of the public rooms except the Cedar Bar and terrace, with the exception of guide dogs. They will be happy to organise to walk your dog if you require

The grounds

The most striking feature within the grounds is the avenue of lime trees. Planted circa 1716 as a 19th century gentlemen's vista rather than as an entrance way, the avenue is the longest line of limes in England. Walk to the far end and find a special 25 foot silver birch planted in 2006 commemorating the 25th Anniversary of Exclusive Hotels and Venues. Take a seat on the specially commissioned arched seating surrounding the tree, admiring the view back up the avenue to the beautiful William and Mary house.

Room location

DL, County Durham, stayed: June 2018

Stay was during exceptionally hot weather. There is no air conditioning.  The restaurant ventilation ducting is noisy and located directly outside our bathroom window.  Creating a through draft at night was not possible.
Obviously this did spoil the experience.

R, Billingshurst, stayed: June 2015

We went to relax and achieved this very satisfactorily. Our only comment is that the menu in the dining room had very few choices of main course and remained the same for all four nights of our stay. Fine for one or two nights but too limited for four nights.
