Short break as advertised in the Daily Telegraph
All staff very helpful and friendly
Room warm and comfortable greatly appreciated prosecco and chocolates.
Restaurant was cold and too dark to be able to read menu easily Food was excellent.
Would have liked to see more of the castle.

Great stay only complaint is that the lighting across the court yard to the reception desk is very poor you could have brighter lights that perhaps come on only when people are passing near them . Another thing we found confusing was the direction signs to the dinning room etc. However everything lelse was top marks we stayed in room 38 which was great,. We will I hope one day return. Thank you.
Ps the laid out breakfast room was fantastic with its continental
Breakfast.
Amazing Hotel
Our stay was amazing at Lumley Castle, all the staff from arrival to departure could not have been better, friendly, helpful and very professional. Our State Room was splendid, very luxurious and warn considering the freezing temperatures outside. We enjoyed some amazing food in the restaurant and hope to return later in the year. Highly recommended
Lovely
A beautiful building in a super location. Excellent staff in the dining room; reception less so - the chap rather smug. So much to praise in terms of the building but the plastic statuettes and false flowers inside rather let things down. The steaks overpriced but what a beautiful restaurant and the monkfish was superb. Lauryn in the restaurant was outstanding, as good as it is possible to be. Breakfast was excellent.
So much to praise and yet Lumley Castle is 4* rather than 5. It is so beautiful that one cannot help thinking opportunities are being missed. With so much going for it, the prices expensive, it really should be offering a greater sense of luxury. But we loved our stay. I think the fact of all the staff who we met, most very good, only Lauryn was of the highest quality, stops me giving our stay 5*.
Superbly located.
Stunning Castle
Very welcoming staff on reception, room was in courtyard and was warm and well presented. Food was good but not outstanding.
Our only niggle was given choice of eating at 6.30 or 8pm. We chose 8pm but looked in at restaurant at 6.30 and not one person was in, and at the later time was only a handful of people, it wasn't as if a large group or party was taking place.
Surroundings where spectacular and staff happy to let us have a look around.

This promised much but was poor in terms of detail, I had to send back a dirty glass that came to the table with my wine in and did not expect to see glasses left from the previous evening when our room was serviced. The staff were friendly and helpful.
A suggestion rather than part of the review - The information book about the hotel and area was of poor quality and for an area so rich in history boring in the extreme perhaps the marketing department need to look at publications from the local area such as those from Durham Cathedral, the Castle Museum and the Palace at Bishop Auckland?
