Matfen Hall was completely rebuilt in 1832-6 on the site of an earlier Jacobean house by Sir Edward Blackett, the 6th baronet. Parts of the Jacobean house, dating from 1690, still survive as does the original lintel stone with the family motto of the Douglas family who built the earlier house. The last family member to live in Matfen Hall was Sir Hugh Blackett, 8th baronet, who died in 1961. Following his death and the sale of much of the contents to pay death duties, the Hall was leased to the Leonard Cheshire Foundation. For the next 30 years the Hall cared for some 30 severely disabled residents.

Anniversary stay

Margaret B, stayed: December 2015

My husband and myself have recently returned from Matfen Hall where we stayed overnight. We were very disappointed with the hotel. Paintwork on doors and staircase were chipped. Carpets threadbare. Marks on carpet in bedroom. Old fashioned bathroom. Very poor dressing gowns. The one I had had holes in. Food nice, but my starter was so small I ate it in two bites. The final bill was wrong so we had to get that sorted. I think the whole hotel needs a revamp. It certainly doesn't deserve the star rating it has.

Feedback

JA, Newcastle Upon Tyne, stayed: November 2015

I visit your hotel very frequently and always look forward to returning. It improves each time - thank you!
The restaurant is fabulous with delicious food in luxurious surroundings and beautiful views. Our room was excellent - again with beautiful views across the golf course. My wife is returning in January with ten friends for an overnight stay and celebration. The only negative comment I have is that my wife had a half hour spa treatment and it barely lasted 20 minutes - I believe because they leave 5 minutes to get undressed and 5 minutes for a so-called consultation!! If you pay for a half hour treatment, the treatment itself should last 30 minutes surely!

Great hotel set in Northumberland countryside. Fabulous room with views of the golf course. Staff were really friendly . Evening meal was excellent with local produce. Great facilities, just wish we had stayed for more than the one night.
