History of the hotel

The Manor dates back to the Doomesday Book, when it was confiscated in 1066 by William the Conqueror and passed to his brother in law, Earl Moreton.

Jon de Angle, reputed to have been the first Member of Parliament, became the Manor's next owner, before it was passed to the Verney family when Sir Robert Whittingham's daughter married John Verney. The Verney family lived at the Manor for the next 150 years.

The Anderson family then occupied the Manor for the next four generations, prior to it being inherited by the Harcourt family. Sir William Harcourt abandoned the Manor in the 19th century, having objected to the building of the railway. It was burnt down in 1835.

Local landowner Joseph Grout Williams commissioned architect John Lion to build a new Tudor style Manor in 1872. He then occupied the Manor from 1875 until 1983, when the racehorse owner and commentator Dorian Williams sold the property to The Grass Roots Company.

In 1987, the Manor was purchased by an independent Hotelier and in 1989 restored to its original grandeur it re-opened as a Country House Hotel.

Wonderful stay

PD, Bedfordshire, stayed: February 2019

They whole stay was splendid. The staff could not have been more helpful. The refurbishments, decor, furniture and furnishings delightful. Some stairways were in process of being decorated and the workers here were quiet and courteous; standing aside to let us through. Everything in the restaurant was excellent. There was a good choice, the food looked beautiful and tasted delicious. The waiters were attentive but not overbearing.

Very poor spa !

SE, Buckinghamshire, stayed: December 2018

We had a refub room was was all nice and new . Evening dinner staff (in particular Claire ) where very polite and accommodating and friendly really made our evening special . Couldn t say the same for the breakfast staff! The spa is awful! Run down small not somewhere you would want to sit and relax . Treatment rooms are in a corridor so lots of noise so not relaxing. The steam and sauna aren t anywhere near the pool area you have to go down a damp dark celar type corridor with a key card to get in . Just awful! it s a shame as the hotel ( once refub complete ) is beautiful. Because of the spa I would never stay again it really let s the whole hotel down . Such a shame . And I believe they don t have any plans to re do the spa . For this reason I would recommend to friends either

The hotel is set in beautiful grounds and first impressions were good. The reception staff were professional and welcoming. The other hotel staff we met were friendly and very informative about the history of the Manor. The evening meals were included in our stay. There was a small but varied menu and the food was good. The breakfast buffet was also good. It was a shame that there were renovation works being carried out at the hotel which woke us up at 8am but I understand that the hotel are updating and I can see that this will be a large project. The bedroom that we stayed in was very large and luxurious and also had a sofa and writing desk and view onto the lovely gardens.
