History of the hotel

The Manor dates back to the Doomesday Book, when it was confiscated in 1066 by William the Conqueror and passed to his brother in law, Earl Moreton.

Jon de Angle, reputed to have been the first Member of Parliament, became the Manor's next owner, before it was passed to the Verney family when Sir Robert Whittingham's daughter married John Verney. The Verney family lived at the Manor for the next 150 years.

The Anderson family then occupied the Manor for the next four generations, prior to it being inherited by the Harcourt family. Sir William Harcourt abandoned the Manor in the 19th century, having objected to the building of the railway. It was burnt down in 1835.

Local landowner Joseph Grout Williams commissioned architect John Lion to build a new Tudor style Manor in 1872. He then occupied the Manor from 1875 until 1983, when the racehorse owner and commentator Dorian Williams sold the property to The Grass Roots Company.

In 1987, the Manor was purchased by an independent Hotelier and in 1989 restored to its original grandeur it re-opened as a Country House Hotel.

Disappointing

AR, Buckinghamshire, stayed: June 2019

We were really looking forward to our relaxing break at Pendley Manor but were very disappointed overall.
Firstly, we were supposed to have a bottle of Prosecco in our room on arrival. It wasn t there so we called reception for it. It took 40 minutes to arrive and it was warm, sitting in an inch of water in an ice bucket with no ice..
Then dinner was very disappointing. The starter (4 dry bread rolls!?) and dessert (brownie) were extremely poor. The steak main course was better but was so bland we had to add our own seasoning (although we had to wait for salt & pepper. Why wasn t it on the table?) The food presentation was so outdated. Everything was too much trouble for the waiting staff who didn t seem to know what they were doing.
Staff at breakfast were rude - only serving one cup of tea, nothing else was offered. Waitresses pushing in front of customers to make toast, all of them looking fed up. A lot more effort went into keeping the wedding guests happy.
We were prepared that the spa was under construction but the pool and jacuzzi were pleasant. We would have liked robes and slippers in the room. Every other spa hotel we have been to provide them. The room was very nice but for a superior room we expected a bath and more than two teabags and one packet of biscuits. It seemed as though they were scrimping in everything. Cost cutting should not be apparent to guests paying 209 for a night.
Basically very disappointing stay. We expected a lot more from a 4 star hotel.
Reception staff were pleasant but waiting staff were very unprofessional and let the whole stay down for us.
It was so disappointing as we were there to celebrate a rare night away, the first we have ever had away from our children and it wasn t anywhere near as good as had hoped. It s a real shame.
We wouldn t recommend the hotel to others or return ourselves based on our experience.

Room great and that's where it ends!!

TEM, stayed: May 2019

Check in time 3pm. Room not ready until 4.15pm, waiting around very annoying. You have such a short space of time when you stay for one night in a hotel that every second counts. We have never had this anywhere before and this was not a great start to my one night away to celebrate my Birthday.
Complimentary champagne that was supposed to be in our room on arrival was no where to be seen. Requested for and received at 6.15pm which was too late for us to drink as we were eating at 7pm so we took it and swapped it for a bottle of wine to have with dinner.
The dining hall is beautiful but sadly the food does not live up to the expectations you would have of 2AA rosette restaurant. I can only imagine that the chef who was working there at the time this was awarded has now left. We had a set meal as we had booked through off peak luxury which was really strange as there were just a couple of choices for a 3 course meal but weirdly everything else on the menu was a similar cost so I am unsure as to why you could not choose from the whole menu.
Make sure you get down to breakfast promptly as we were told you could go to breakfast until 10.30 but it actually closes at 10.30. We arrived at 10:15 and were asked to grab anything that we wanted as they were closing the doors which they literally did straight away. The breakfast area was a complete mess and very disappointing. Just to add to it I quickly ordered two poached eggs which were hard boiled which if you knew me you would know is my pet hate. If you can't even poach an egg there is something seriously wrong going on.
There was a wedding going on at the hotel and I believe that this led to the total neglect of all the other paying customers. If you have a wedding to cater for you need staff to deal with it. Our waitress at dinner was going between the dining hall and the wedding trying to serve everyone, absolutely ridiculous. This was a very expensive very disappointing night away.

Disappointed

Anon, stayed: May 2019

If we had been made aware that there were 2 weddings we wouldn't have booked. Disappointing that the hotel has only 1 bar as it meant we had to sit amongst wedding guests. Our room didn't have the chilled bottle of presecco as promised until we asked. No face flannels in bathroom. A dressing table/mirror would have been nice. The package was Romantic spa break but the spa was closed for refurbishment.
We had breakfast in the conservatory which had been used for the wedding disco the previous evening and noticed the floor hadn't been cleaned properly.

Birthday Treat

John, Northamptonshire, stayed: March 2019

Upon entering the hotel we knew about the renovations so expected scaffolding and tarpaulin and there was. The pool area looked tired but was clean, the sauna and steam room were being renovated so not useable. Prosecco in the room - lovely, dinner in the restaurant - lovely, breakfast in the restaurant, a bit disappointing - self service was ok but 4 times we had to ask for tea and coffee at our table (we were in the corner) and each time we were told, we are just refilling the jugs, someone will come over. I was on the verge of getting up myself to do it. Maybe one person should have the designated job of pouring tea and coffee instead of four members of staff doing everything, instead of the restaurant manager finding a member of staff maybe do it herself.
