History of the hotel

The Manor dates back to the Doomesday Book, when it was confiscated in 1066 by William the Conqueror and passed to his brother in law, Earl Moreton.

Jon de Angle, reputed to have been the first Member of Parliament, became the Manor's next owner, before it was passed to the Verney family when Sir Robert Whittingham's daughter married John Verney. The Verney family lived at the Manor for the next 150 years.

The Anderson family then occupied the Manor for the next four generations, prior to it being inherited by the Harcourt family. Sir William Harcourt abandoned the Manor in the 19th century, having objected to the building of the railway. It was burnt down in 1835.

Local landowner Joseph Grout Williams commissioned architect John Lion to build a new Tudor style Manor in 1872. He then occupied the Manor from 1875 until 1983, when the racehorse owner and commentator Dorian Williams sold the property to The Grass Roots Company.

In 1987, the Manor was purchased by an independent Hotelier and in 1989 restored to its original grandeur it re-opened as a Country House Hotel.

Better when the renovations are finished.

Anon, stayed: September 2018

I think presently this hotel is more a 3 star than a 4, it will be much better when they have finished the renovations, the spa is very tatty at the moment. We were in a renovated room (with drilling going on next door) its the first time we have stayed in a 4 start hotel with no bottled water in the room and the first time in any hotel where there were no subtitles on the TV! We are deaf and need these so we asked but apparently they don't have them! I find this unbelievable lots of people I know that are not deaf use subtitles when in hotels out of courtesy to the guests in the next room. I never ever known a hotel not to have them before. Its little things like this and the standard of the staff (not including the Manager of the restaurant who was great) that let this hotel down.

Fantastic hotel

Alex P, Hertfordshire, stayed: August 2018

Recently renovated rooms, a fantastic team who are welcoming on arrival and provide great service at dinner and breakfast, and beautiful grounds. Only thing needing work is the Spa, which feels dated and in-congruent with the rest of the beautiful hotel. We had a fantastic anniversary stay here in a large room with small touches such as a small gift box of chocolates on our bed when we arrived really highlighting a lovely stay.

Not a satisfactory break

BC, Nottinghamshire, stayed: August 2018

The hotel generally lacks management, particularly in the dining room: the tables are too small, even the tables for 2 people are inadequate. We knew at the time of booking that the hotel was being refurbished and this in no way interfered with our stay as our room was one of the finished ones. The bathroom lacks fittings - e.g. a shelf on which to place toilet bags - they have to go on the floor! The gym and spa are basically in the basement, with many doors in between, which all have to be opened with your room key: gym towels are available at the spa but only if the lady on duty is around - if not you have to go through all the doors again to get a towel from Reception!

Our Diamond Wedding celebration with our family

Jan, stayed: August 2018

Our booking through offpeakluxury was slightly more expensive than booking directly with the hotel, however the extra cost was worth it for, the recently refurbished rooms, a bottle of Proseco in each room, being allowed anything on the Dinner menu and having an extended stay until 1pm on the day of departure. My family enjoyed the pool and gym and playing croquet on the lawn. It was in a beautiful location and we enjoyed our walk up on the Ridgeway nearby. The menu allowed plenty of choice for all tastes. Two of my family had to leave before 8am and were given packed breakfasts, A long table was set up especially for the remaining eleven family members so we could eat breakfast together The only downside was that there were no single room available on the offer so I had to pay for seven double rooms for 13 of us and there were no twin bedded rooms on this offer so two grandchildren had to share a bed. However, they didn t mind too much as the beds were huge. The family enjoyed the pool and gym but were not so impressed by the spa. We would all love to stay at the hotel again but for a family of 13 it was expensive for us and so we probably won t go again. However it was a great venue for our Diamond Wedding celebration together and we all enjoyed our stay very much indeed

Wonderful Neo-Jacobean building but failed the creme brulee test

MC, Essex, stayed: June 2018

This is a country house hotel in the Chilterns. The Neo-Jacobean building is a delight, especially the hall and staircase. Their are pleasant gardens and there was a peacock wandering the grounds. The room was in a modern extension and was quite large and pleasant. The problem was the food. The breakfast was fine but the scones were not light enough at the afternoon tea, The dinner menu was unimaginative and the steak very tough. The creme brulee was one of the worst I have had
