Lacking something

Paul, Cumbria, stayed: October 2019

I was expecting to be amazed by this hotel, even upgrade the room to more expensive to enjoy it further, the package seemed really good.  Afternoon tea, evening meal and overnight stay and use of spa facilities
we booked for a Sunday night for our wedding anniversary, we arrived early to do a walk in the area and were able to use the car park whilst we went for our walk, I checked in reception, who also mentioned the room would be ready for around 1pm, we got back about 215pm and the room was ready so were able to check in and put our stuff in the room, we had afternoon tea which was pretty standard, failed to meet expectations, lots of sandwiches which were either all white bread or all brown bread, for example white for the ham brown for the salmon when half and half would have been better, the cakes and scone were also disappointing, the hotel was very quiet. no ambiance and staff whilst there for you were not able to join in any chat about a walk in the area as they have probably never walked in the lake district.
The room was nice if a little tired in places and bed comfortable enough, heating was either cold or red hot with only controls on radiators that blasted heat out whilst we were having our evening meal so the room was too hot on return. the spa facilities are lovely if a little small when lots of people want to use. but we thoroughly enjoyed few hours in the spa. didn't quite feel luxury, again some things like coat hooks missing, flooring damaged and little bits of wear and tear.  The evening meal was a set menu with choice, of start main and desert, it was nice food which looked pretty, but not amazing.  Breakfast was good choice of cereals etc with tea or coffee and waiter service for anything cooked, again good but nothing to write home about.  I never seen it on website but in the room guide says evening meal, men advised to wear long sleeve shirt, at other times clothing can be more relaxed and walking clothes worn by most at breakfast.  It is good but could be so much better, just lacking a bit of attention to detail, quality, service.  All in all disappointing, not somewhere I would be in a hurry to go back to.

Lovely relaxing stay

Anon, stayed: August 2019

From the moment we entered the hotel, we were made to feel welcome. Reception staff were excellent, our room was spacious and well appointed and the restaurant served delicious food - the breakfast menu was extensive and the dinner menu had different dishes each night - all of which were delicious. The location is excellent, being only a few minutes walk from Grasmere, with all its quirky gift shops and cafes. Ambleside is a short drive away so, again, a great location. To sum up, I would say that our short break at Rothay was great and I would have no hesitation in recommending it.
