In need of renovation

DW, Essex, stayed: February 2023

Food very good,service very poor.
Our valentines evening meal was rebooked 30 minutes later, when we arrived in the restaurant nobody could find our booking then seated on a huge table for about 8people.
Breakfast the first morning was chaos again bad service staff inot any idea was hot breakfast meals was to go where.
On the room situation I don t expect a 4star hotel room to have holes in the door, sink blocked, carpet badly stained required general reddecoration.
Overall food very good but accommodation and staff need sorting out.

Great facade - not so great on the inside

Dissatisfied customer, stayed: February 2023

The facade on approach is certainly impressive, and the old part of the building had atmosphere
( though it felt like the panelling was not original). I am disabled and we had phoned the hotel about accessibility. They told me one room was suitable for my scooter, but the passage was tight. the room did have enough space. The bathroom was huge with wet room style shower. The toilet was high which was good, but got soaked when using the shower. (Move the loo roll) The room had Aircon/heating but we hadn t been told, and spent ages trying to work the radiator. There was hardly any space to stand things. No dressing table with mirror, and no light near the wall mirror.
The hotel told me I could access all public spaces with ramps. The bar was up about 8 steps ! They brought out ramps to get from bedroom to lounge and hall to restaurant. The second day they had removed them and nobody knew where. I was marooned in a hallway for 25 minutes. Late for breakfast. The buffet had run out of croissants, pastries, melon and fruit yoghurt all 3 days.
The restaurant was very plain and had no atmosphere. Two days they sat us near entrance. Ok but miles from buffet. Third day they had not saved us that table. No room for me to get through between tables. After keeping us waiting in the doorway they finally asked people to move so I could get through. I felt penned in. Embarrassing. The staff were rude. I ordered poached eggs. They were thrown on table with a curt the toast is over there . Wonderful ! The eggs were on a cold plate and cold before toast was fetched by my husband. His breakfast was cold by then ! They cleared tables around us, crashing about and leaving chairs all over the place. We had to move them to get out.
This is not a disabled friendly hotel. Do not believe it is ! It felt like the facade was there but everything behind it was sort of false. I would not go back.

Beautiful house, staff seem peeved

Anon, stayed: February 2023

The house is beautiful as are the grounds but our room was clean but very basic. No explanation about spa, whether to take robes etc and staff all but lady working in spa generally had an attitude of civil but annoyed, like morale is low. Wouldn t go again as their mood seemed to drag what was supposed to be a chilled weekend down.

Could have been better

GB, Buckinghamshire, stayed: February 2023

The hotel itself is lovely if a bit tired in places, the food was lovely and the grounds are very pretty even in winter. However the service across the hotel was quite poor and not reflective of the supposed standard of the hotel, we came away feeling that being there was really an inconvenience to the staff.
In the restaurant we asked to be moved from the 'centre aisle' (in an empty restaurant) to be told that our booking was in the 'system' and would upset the chef so couldn't be changed. At breakfast the next day the toaster started filling the room with smoke and set off the hotel smoke detectors (the second time during our stay), the staff seemed to just ignore it and it took my partner and other guests to move the table and unplug it. The staff simply opened the windows and stated 'oh it does that all the time' we had to stop other arriving guests and plugging it back in.
We had planned to use the swimming pool before breakfast on the Sunday morning but it didn't open until 10am which meant we weren't able to use the pool or other facilities at all, which was a shame as this was one of the main reasons for booking this hotel.
All in all we had a nice time but it could have easily been so much nicer without much effort from the left disappointed
