Facilities at Spread Eagle Hotel & Spa

Set in the historic Sussex market town of Midhurst within its own picturesque grounds, the Spread Eagle Hotel dates back in parts to 1430 and was once a coaching inn favoured by the rich and famous of the time. Today, it is the quintessentially English historic hotel, retaining its heritage, yet providing every contemporary comfort.

Stepping into the hotel is like taking a journey back in time. Relax in the comfortable leather chairs of the 15th-century lounge with its ancient oak beams and leaded-light windows, warmed by huge open fire in the cooler months. Just above the lounge is the Queen's Suite, said to have accommodated Elizabeth I when she came this way in 1591. The sentried hallway leads to the Restaurant with its inglenook fireplace and stained glass windows, where guests enjoy fine dining in traditional surroundings.

Fantastic location, quaint hotel, poor restaurant

Anon, stayed: January 2020

We enjoyed our stay. The hotel was clean and welcoming, with easy check in. The spa is small, but had all the facilities and friendly staff. If we stayed again we would not eat in the restaurant, instead use one of the many places to eat in town. The evening meal was average and the breakfast was inedible (hard boiled poached eggs, mushy flavour less tomatoes and microwaved bullet mushrooms). Make sure you check your bill before paying, as we were charged for items we had not ordered (petit fours with Irish coffee) and twice tried to charge for drinks already paid for (wine and champagne), once on the restaurant bill, which was corrected, then again on the final check out bill.

Pleasant atmosphere in charming old building.

Jane B, Surrey, stayed: November 2019

Very helpful staff, obviously wanting to make our stay a good one.
Rooms luxurious but the duvet was VERY heavy and hot. I understand you keep these on even during the summer which must hellish.
I normally sleep very well, but had restless night pushing the duvet on and off.
I really think you need to get lighter weight ones or provide blankets.
Bar and lounge areas, very restful. Like most hotels, the bar food and drinks were pricey.
Over all, I would recommend this hotel.

A lovely place to stay but some drawbacks.

RE, stayed: September 2019

I booked many months in advance and we due an upgraded room subject to availability. The weekend we arrived there was a wedding so they could not upgrade us. We had to ask for the Wine that was included red in the offer which signalled they were not really in top of their game. The room was ok. Unfortunately the plumbing did not work properly and gurgled a lot of the night and the bath and sink did not drain properly so we had to shower in dirty water by our feet. When we drew the hotel attention to his they seems to know about the problem and yet still placed us in the room they promised to sort it out which they did not or could not do. Our room also was not cleaned u TIL we asked about this at dinner he following evening. By his time we were annoyed and spoke with the manager. To her credit she accepted responsibility for he issues we raised. She did not charge us for any wine we bought and offered us a free night to return there. She was very gracious. We think the hotel were overwhelmed by the wedding taking place as he service in the restaurant was poor in the night if the wedding and the poor manager seemed to be the lead waitress. On a positive note the good was good the pool lovely and the setting of the hotel charming.

Step back in time

Jacqueline, West Sussex, stayed: August 2019

This hotel is set in a quiet location just off the High Street with plenty of parking. On approach visually the flowers and gardens are very well kept and it looks very inviting and beautiful in the sunshine. The patio seating area leads to large doors to a conservatory area which again is beautifully designed and I felt to me this is an extension to the garden, which I found pleasing.
The hotel has so much character because of it's age and it feels as if you have stepped back in time.
It has a quirky reception area and low doorways and corridors. The other part of the hotel and spa is very modern and it has a luxury feel.
The room we stayed in was lovely and nothing to critique. The coffee and tea was good. Bathroom was very nice and a lovely comfortable bed.
We had a cream tea which was excellent. Very good scones, probably the best I've tasted with good jam and clotted cream. Great selection of tea with a timer. Great service and served by a quirky older gentleman which was very charming and perfect.
Meal in the restaurant was good. I had the best crab starter which had not been messed around with too much which was perfect and an excellent desert. Great service from the restaurant manager.
Staff were polite and tried their best to accommodate our needs. I liked the staff here because they tried to please, put in some effort, seemed to appreciate the custom and smiled which was nice. They seemed genuine and not stuffy like other places we have stated, which felt more authentic to me and the experience we had.
We are definitely coming back and decided on experiencing a different season, maybe the winter time to experience the old fires burning and dark evenings. Looking forward to it already!

It is difficult how to begin
The service absolute toor took 30 min to get a menu
For the afternoon tea did not get to see any body
after that so we left to go to our room
The rooms decor looked like the furnishings
Belonged in a skip
4 biscuits in a jar ?
The stairs going up to the room ware dirty and not been
Cleaned in the two days we ware there
Overall te staff looked out of place and not trained
To assist the costumer
The price if nearly 600 for two nights
Was exaggerated
The breakfast yak
Never again to that hotel.
