Anniversary getaway

Charlotte, West Midlands, stayed: September 2019

We spent an enjoyable weekend at Stanbrook Abbey hotel. The offer was good value as it included dinner and much needed bottle of champagne on arrival but we were also lucky enough to be upgraded to a suite which helped make our celebrations more special. The room was lovely and well equipped, the food in the restaurant was very good quality (not to mention a great breakfast selection of cold and hot options) and the grounds are great for exploring. The whole place has a peaceful ambience, especially considering there was a wedding on when we we there but we were never disturbed by any of it, in fact after looking around the hotel, I want to get married again at this place! Would definitely stay again!

Simply the Best

Alan W, Staffordshire, stayed: September 2019

This is the most amaaazing place I have ever stayed at. To call it just a hotel is a complete understatement and paying it a huge disservice. This hotel is centred in an old monastery and abbey. It is like staying at an old country estate like Chatsworth House. As you wonder around there is just so much ro see and so many corners and quiet areas where you can relax with a nice malt. Simply the Best in every single sense imaginable. Everyone should add a stay here to their bucket list.

A beautiful hotel

DW, Derbyshire, stayed: August 2019

This is a lovely hotel in a beautiful setting. The staff are friendly, helpful and welcoming. The rooms are nice and the hotel itself is stunning. We loved Stan the room sheep. The hotel has so many beautiful features, the great hall is breathtaking, and we were lucky enough to see it set up for a wedding.

We opted for the guided tour, even though we had already explored and it was well worth it. Dougie was a fantastic guide with so much knowledge about the place. It is also well worth mentioning the bell tower as the views from the top are worth the climb.

We had our evening meal here and the food was excellent, as was the breakfast the following morning.

We would love to go back to this hotel.

Very disappointing

Duncan, Worcestershire, stayed: August 2019

Staying at a luxury hotel (and paying accordingly), we expected (or at least hoped) for a luxury experience. Unfortunately, the stunning building was repeatedly let down by (admittedly mostly minor) lapses in quality.
We went for the DB&B package with OffPeak that said it included Champagne to welcome us. This turned out to be pink sparkling wine. This wasn't a good start! We wanted to take a tour of the amazing place (as it said in the brochure in the room). The receptionist said this wasn't offered any more but that we could 'do it ourselves'. When we checked out (we stayed 2 nights) and complained about this, the (different) receptionist said that wasn't true and that we could have had a tour at any time.
Our meal on the first night had a very limited selection of vegetarian food. We asked if something more interesting could be made up (2 of our party were vegetarians) for our second night, we were told to 'see someone when we arrived at dinner'. This would obviously have been too late for anything to have been made, and the receptionist made it clear that she wasn't interested in discussing the matter further.
On the second night, a separate vegan menu was available (which we initially thought was due to our enquiry). However, it seems this menu should have been available the first night. Also, we had an iPad to choose the wines which wasn't available the first night.
In the morning, the veggie sausages weren't cooked when they arrived (making them obviously pretty much inedible). When we asked the next morning for them to be 'well done' they were still underdone.
The best part of the stay was the barman on the first night, who delighted in making us some superb cocktails. In fact, this was the only thing about the stay that felt special (and we were there for a 50th birthday celebration). That was his last day, however, so the next night the service was only good (not excellent).
The staff quality over the time we stayed was very variable. Our pre-dinner drinks were forgotten about, but when he remembered, the waiter took them off our bill. The first morning we struggled to get anyone to serve us at breakfast, the second morning the service we were well looked after.
All in all, this could be a great place but is let down with patchy service (which varies from occasionally excellent through mostly poor to quite rude). As a place to go for a special occasion, I'm afraid I can't recommend it.

Stanbrook Abbey Hotel

AP, Northamptonshire, stayed: August 2019

The staff were very helpful and friendly, however, I was disappointed, with a couple of things. As part of our package, we were to have a tour of the abbey. When we asked to book the tour, we were advised that they would have to check to see when the guide would be available and come back to us. We didn't hear back, so we went to check on Monday and found out that there was actually only one person who conducted the tours and he was on holiday so we could not have the tour as we were leaving on Tuesday.

Secondly, I am a vegetarian and my friend eats fish occasionally, however, as we stayed for three nights we ran out of options by the second night. When we asked how often the menus were changed, we were advised that the menus only changed every four months as the chefs like to use seasonal ingredients. I found that rather strange, even if you want to use seasonal ingredients, you can change the menu often especially if people are coming to stay for longer than one or two nights.
