luxury break

CM, Bristol, stayed: October 2014

I was disappointed that the room was not in the old part of the hotel. It was in a 70's look annex and the view was of the other 1970s part of the hotel - not what I was expecting or what the website promised.
The food was also disappointing, a stilton parfait dessert course was unpleasant and although the staff were helpful and offered to change it, it was a very odd dish. I thought overall the night was overpriced in view of the room and food. Also it was cold and rainy outside and not one of the open fires was lit in the hotel - a fact that was also commented on by other guests who were also disappointed about this.

Very enjoyable one night stay for our anniversary. They only minor downside was the lack of a king size bed in our room ( 5 ) which could easily have been accommodated .

Lygon Arms. Well past its sell by date

Peter S, stayed: January 2016

Having looked forward to the chance of staying at this iconic Cotswold hotel for many years, the sad truth is that the hotel is well past its sell by date and is in need of a major refurbishment if it is to compete with the Dormy House hotel nearby.  The decor and carpets in particular need upgrading with patches of carpet being held together by black tape. Breakfast was poor, with cold food and chipped crockery.  Fruit was left in the bedroom, with no plate or knife.  The dinner was average and extra charges were made for certain dishes despite us having paid upfront for dinner to the tune of £40 per head. The charge was removed for the first night, it appeared again on the second night, with the most unhelpful of restaurant managers telling me he had warned me after the first night that there would be a charge for certain dishes. The staff seemed under pressure and not particularly motivated to deliver a service one would have expected having paid a hefty price for two nights, out of season.  The hotel may have a grand reputation of one of the oldest establishments in the Cotswolds, it will not retain this status for much longer unless serious attention is paid to the competition and standards now being set by the other hotels offering more modern and efficient accommodation and service.
