Parts of the Jacobean house, dating from 1690, still survive as does the original lintel stone with the family motto of the Douglas family who built the earlier house. The last family member to live in Matfen Hall was Sir Hugh Blackett, 8th baronet, who died in 1961. Following his death and the sale of much of the contents to pay death duties, the Hall was leased to the Leonard Cheshire Foundation. For the next 30 years the Hall cared for some 30 severely disabled residents.

Lovely stay at Matfen House Hotel

Catriona L, Midlothian, stayed: May 2018

We booked using a voucher (partially as had to pay something towards our stay) for a 2 night stay.
The booking process, over the phone, was made extremely easy due to very efficient and pleasant operator.
Our stay included dinner both nights. Breakfast also included was varied and great quality.
Our room was beautiful and very spacious. 4 poster bed and lovely seated area overlooking the golf course.
We used the spa and swimming pool, all beautifully appointed and quiet!
Dinner in the restaurant on our first night was well presented, and tasty. A free bottle of wine was included with our meal. Dinner the second night was disappointing. We looked at the restaurant menu and it was the same as the night before and we asked if we could use the conservatory menu instead. This was agreed. Our meal however was very disappointing and my fish goujons and sweet potato fries were burnt. No-one came to ask how our meal was and when the waitress came to clear up I pointed this out as had eaten very little. To be fair, the waitress seemed to be rushed off her feet and was also attending the bar area, (this was in direct contrast to our restaurant experience, where there was an abundance of very attentive waiting staff)
The manager came and apologised and said he would take the cost of my meal off the bill, as the meal was included in our stay this was a meaningless gesture. On our departure, when checking out, we had to query our bill, which included the "free" wine and our drinks. This was resolved by the receptionist who was very patient with our query.
It did however feel as if the gesture of removing my conservatory meal meant nothing.
Our overall stay was lovely and we would stay again.

A great place to celebrate an anniversary.

RP, County Durham, stayed: March 2018

Welcoming staff. Great rooms with extensive views over the golf course, which was covered in snow! Relaxing drinks before an excellent meal and accompanying wine. The staff know how to be attentive without being intrusive. Breakfast set us up for the day ahead. Thoroughly enjoyable stay in a lovely part of the country.

Wonderful Stay

JW, Lincs, stayed: August 2017

We stayed here for 3 nights for our wedding anniversary and we had a wonderful time. The staff were very attentive and nothing was too much trouble. The restaurant was in the Library which was a delightful room and the food was delicious. We stayed in Room 2, which overlooked the golf course, in the main part of the hotel and it was gorgeous, so spacious and all furnishings and bathroom were 1st class. We would certainly recommend this hotel for a romantic break with lovely surrounding countryside.

Idyllic surroundings

Nicola B, stayed: July 2017

We came here for a 2 night stay at the beginning of July (Sun and Mon night) and had an excellent room that looked over the golf course in front of the hotel. Our room was very spacious and so was the shower room - could have been a room by itself! Gym was well equipped and great spa area around a decent sized pool. Lovely little village that was close by - just through the churchyard from the back of the hotel. Hotel grounds were stunning and the arrangement of conference and wedding venue away from the main hotel is well thought out. Excellent breakfast with cooked items brought to the table and cold buffet of high quality fruit, yogurt, cereal, pastries etc. Dinner was also very good except I am gluten free and the chef didn't amend some of the menu so if you were staying more than 3 days your choice would be limited. Also they made a mistake with my meal and brought some pastry on it. Need to up the game on this (and offer nibbles while you are having a drink that are GF). I hate feeling like there isn't anything I can have and it rarely happens when you have a chef preparing meals from scratch.

Most excellent experience

Richard G, Tyne and Wear, stayed: February 2017

I stayed here because my daughter bought me a voucher for two nights after she and her family stayed here on a visit last year. I found it to be a most enjoyable experience with really good food and very helpful staff. It was a pleasant surprise to arrive at the checkout to find the bill for extras was very reasonable, and not the rip off sometimes presented at equivalent hotels. I highly reccommend this hotel.
