Parts of the Jacobean house, dating from 1690, still survive as does the original lintel stone with the family motto of the Douglas family who built the earlier house. The last family member to live in Matfen Hall was Sir Hugh Blackett, 8th baronet, who died in 1961. Following his death and the sale of much of the contents to pay death duties, the Hall was leased to the Leonard Cheshire Foundation. For the next 30 years the Hall cared for some 30 severely disabled residents.

A lovely hotel though the sadly the restaurant service falls short

TP, Leicestershire, stayed: November 2019

A lovely hotel though the sadly the restaurant service falls short - we, 2 of a group of 6, had booked to stay and though principally to enjoy the course it wasn't open. This though couldn't be helped - the Great British weather has it's own agenda sometimes! The hotel is well presented, though a little tired in places, and the reception team were very nice upon our arrival. The bar staff in the conservatory/orangery were pleasant. The evening meal experience is really where the service fell short of what we would expect.
The service was slow and not very attentive. The food was very good, we had a number of different dishes across our party and it was at the standard you would expect from a 2AA rosette restaurant. We ordered wine. red which was brought into the dining room in it's cardboard case, straight from the cellar, a mighty cold cellar, as once presented to the table condensation formed and it was far too cold to serve. Luckily (!?) the bottle was unopened as the waiter just place the bottle on the table without opening it. I understand that screw tops are easier than a cork though I would still expect the bottle to be presented opened. When I made the waiter aware that the wine was unacceptable he took it away and in fairness went to the orangery to get another bottle which was room temperature - again though this was just placed on the table unopened. We would return, to play golf, though not sure if we would stay... I would hope though that feedback is used to improve restaurant service.

Good quality hotel in Northumberland

Brian A, North Yorkshire, stayed: September 2019

We had a lovely Premier room at Matfen Hall and the hotel had a quality traditional feel with excellent staff making you feel welcome. The restaurant menu was rather limited and the food was good rather than excellent but we would stay there again in the future.

Beautiful hotel

Judith S, Warwickshire, stayed: September 2019

We stayed at this lovely hotel for 3 nights. Our room was fantastic two aspects a dressing room and beautiful shower room. The only consideration was the 50 or so steps and distance from the dining room. This was very impressive with very attentive service and beautifully prepared meals. I was concerned reading other comments about the same menu I needn't have worried I could have happily eaten off it but on our third night we were offered a completely different menu which was very thoughtful. We would thoroughly recommend this hotel.

Lovely Two Night Break

SP, Tyne and Wear, stayed: July 2019

We had an excellent room with lovely views over the golf course. Food was very good with good service.
Only one small negative comment, we ordered two cream teas with coffee, the scones didn't arrive till the coffee was finished or cold. Only one serving of scones arrived initially and then when the second serving arrived the scones were obviously very old and rock hard. The knife couldn't cut into one of them. Fresh coffee was brought and eventually fresh scones. On raising a complaint with the supervisor we were refunded for the cream tea.
Problems possibly due to a wedding party ongoing at the same time.
We were not put off staying by this and will definitely be staying again.

Enjoyable stay at beautiful hotel with glorious views

Cynthia, Hampshire, stayed: June 2019

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We were surprised that the menu did not change for dinner in three days. On day three it was difficult to make a choice. We seemed to have a problem with pre dinner drinks! They never arrived! Perhaps we were supposed to go into the bar to order them but this was not clear. We would recommend the hotel and we would stay again. The staff were welcoming and efficient.
