History of the hotel

The first reference to the parish of Doxford goes back to 1296 when a Thomas de Doxford was named in a muster roll and the Doxford family continued in the parish rolls until 1635 when Robert Doxford. The estate then passed through various hands, including the Brown's of Callaly. By 1811 the estate had passed to Miss Mary Taylor, who left Doxford to her relation Henry Aynsley who subsequently changed his name to Henry Taylor. In 1817 he commissioned John Dobson, a Newcastle architect who became one of the most respected and sought after architects in the North-East, to build Doxford Hall, one of his earliest and finest houses which was completed in 1818

Great first trip to Northumberland

KD, Hertfordshire, stayed: March 2019

It has taken my wife and I 72 years to make a first visit to Northumberland but now we have found it we will be back .. but won't be leaving it another 72 years!! Doxford Hall is a little gem and we most certainly be staying here again when our next visit comes round.
We have no real grumbles although we did find the bar service rather slow on occasions particularly when seeking a mid-PM snifter and, whilst we loved the food in The Runciman Restaurant, the menu became very repetitive for a six night stay as too did the piped music. However, do not be put off by these two very minor comments, they are more than compensated by the great staff team all of whom were courteous, helpful and friendlyl; Doxford is a great place to stay and my comments are very personal in foundation - after 72 years one tends to become rather "grumpy" perhaps!!!

lovely overnight stay, with use of spa and restaurant.

JL, Tyne and Wear, stayed: December 2018

The only negative about our stay was an incorrect invoice on check out. it had to be reissued twice before it was correct. However, reception staff were very apologetic and did their best to resolve issues quickly. otherwise a lovely stay.

Excellent!

KH, West Yorkshire, stayed: July 2018

I have special dietary requirements and the team could not have been more helpful. The team at reception were helpful before hand to make sure the restaurant team were fully up to date. I was very well looked after. They went above and beyond. Thank you to all.

Good but not quite excellent

Susan, West Midlands, stayed: July 2018

We had a lovely room and huge bathroom done out very nicely. Attention to detail when servicing the room could be improved a little.
The restaurant is very nice but we thought the food was overpriced and not quite up to the standard they appear to be aiming for or what we expected for the cost. The menu never changed over our three night stay so out of boredom we ate in the bar on the last evening.
The gardens are beautiful and a drink in the sunshine on the terrace very enjoyable. Although off the beaten track it is not far from the main attractions so the location was good for us.
