Location & Local Attractions

The Heights of Abraham

The Heights of Abraham first opening its gates to visitors in 1780. In those days visitors reached Masson Hill on foot, scaling the steep slopes. Nowadays a cable car system is used which was introduced in 1984, the first of its kind in the British Isles. With heights at almost a thousand feet there are stunning views of the Derwent Valley and beyond to Matlock and the Peak District. The Heights of Abraham also offers an insight into the history of the area by giving guests the opportunity to visit and mine and hear stories from the original miners.

Chatsworth House and Gardens

Chatsworth House and Gardens is one of Britain's best loved historic houses and estates and is home to the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire. Set in the magnificent landscape of the Peak District National Park is the house, garden, farmyard, adventure playground, gift shops and a restaurant, offering something for everyone to enjoy. The house and grounds is decorated with many famous works of art, sculptures and the spectacular emperor fountain in the garden. The adventure playground has special activities throughout the season and one of the best farm shops in the country. The 1000 acre park is open all year round where you can enjoy miles of free walks.

The Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site
Amid breath-taking countryside in the heart of rural Derbyshire lies The Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site, originally inscribed by UNESCO in 2001.
The 15 mile site follows the River Derwent from Matlock Bath to Derby. It contains a fascinating series of historic mill complexes including some of the world's first "modern" factories, along with the watercourses that powered them, the settlements built for the mill workers, and the remains of one of the world's earliest railways all situated within a stunning landscape which has changed little over two centuries.
Visitors to The Derwent Valley can enjoy a range of country walks, shopping, art galleries, museums food and drink and abundant local hospitality.

Historic Modernised Hotel with unique Outdoor Spa Pool

Anon, stayed: December 2019

A good location just off A6. The Spa fed pool is a major attraction but its a shame that the changing rooms near it are so run-down, and not very appealing particularly in winter.
We were told that there is also an indoor spa fed pool still awaiting renovation.

We's like to go back in the summer to enjoy the pool and gardens.

Nice rooms, needs work on the rest

Anon, stayed: November 2019

First of all, the hotel didn t have our reservation booked in so it was a good job there were vacant rooms. I had to wait 15 minutes to be even acknowledged by hotel staff as they were taking phone bookings. The room itself was lovely except for the weird wire cover that was looping off the wall and therefore made the wire situation look worse that just plain wires (ever heard of trunking?) The food in the restaurant was really tasty but would be better placed in the 90s when the fad was to have a minimal amount on the plate. It left us feeling hungry. I m not surprised that we were the only people in the restaurant. The facelift has clearly gone into the building and rooms which were lovely, maybe some of the money should have gone into more staff and training.

NEW BATH HOTEL & SPA MATLOCK DERBY

JS, Kent, stayed: September 2019

I booked a double room with en suite facilities. the shower was in the bath therefore as an 87 year old lady and have a problem with my left knee I was unable to step into the bath to shower.. The only room with just a shower was in an old annex at the top of the hotel which I had to climb 50 steps arrive at the room. Also outpoint that there is not a lift at this hotel as this is a grade 2 listed building. I would recommend that should any elderly client wish to stay, I would suggest that you advise your client that this hotel is not suitable, if they have a problem walking. As I have in the past travelled abroad extensively I never thought to ask about showers.

Lovely Hotel

Anon, stayed: September 2019

Extremely friendly staff on reception.
Service in the restaurant was also excellent. Food is definitely quality rather than quantity so don't expect huge portions but meal was gorgeous.

One night in Matlock Bath

Alan B, South Yorkshire, stayed: August 2019

Revisited this hotel after 46 years. Still as good as we expected even though there had been a major refurbishment.
We will definitely return, making sure we have time for a swim in the natural water swimming pool.

Not a memorable stay

Graham, Nottinghamshire, stayed: August 2019

We were told we could not book in to the hotel until 3PM, but the wedding party were already there and booking in ahead of us. This was poor planning. We hoped to go for a dip in the pool but it left it a bit late for that by the time we were checked in and settled. We were told we had been upgraded to a Deluxe Room, but the shower was either red hot or cold and the temperature was not easily adjusted. The gourmet meal portions were tiny, meaning you have to choose a pudding which my wife could not have on her diet. Given the small amount of food at night, we would have preferred a larger English breakfast option.

Some bits Great others not so great

Kypros, Herts, stayed: July 2019

The good bits. The room was freshly decorated with modern furnishings the bathroom was new and luxurious.
The bad bits.No hair dryer! No Safe and the bath could do with a grap handle for older guests.
The restaurants were pleasantly decorated in a minimalist style. The meals were very good but the breakfast lack variety. No cold meats no fresh fruit salad.
The service was good except but could have been a lot better if they had adequate staff.
The greatest fault, rather disturbing really, was the lack.of evacuation procedures in each room!
If there was a fire we wouldn't know where to go or how they would have ensured we were accounted for! This needs urgent attention.
