The Heights of Abraham

The Heights of Abraham first opening its gates to visitors in 1780. In those days visitors reached Masson Hill on foot, scaling the steep slopes. Nowadays a cable car system is used which was introduced in 1984, the first of its kind in the British Isles. With heights at almost a thousand feet there are stunning views of the Derwent Valley and beyond to Matlock and the Peak District. The Heights of Abraham also offers an insight into the history of the area by giving guests the opportunity to visit and mine and hear stories from the original miners.

Chatsworth House and Gardens

Chatsworth House and Gardens is one of Britain's best loved historic houses and estates and is home to the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire. Set in the magnificent landscape of the Peak District National Park is the house, garden, farmyard, adventure playground, gift shops and a restaurant, offering something for everyone to enjoy. The house and grounds is decorated with many famous works of art, sculptures and the spectacular emperor fountain in the garden. The adventure playground has special activities throughout the season and one of the best farm shops in the country. The 1000 acre park is open all year round where you can enjoy miles of free walks.

The Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site
Amid breath-taking countryside in the heart of rural Derbyshire lies The Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site, originally inscribed by UNESCO in 2001.
The 15 mile site follows the River Derwent from Matlock Bath to Derby. It contains a fascinating series of historic mill complexes including some of the world's first "modern" factories, along with the watercourses that powered them, the settlements built for the mill workers, and the remains of one of the world's earliest railways all situated within a stunning landscape which has changed little over two centuries.
Visitors to The Derwent Valley can enjoy a range of country walks, shopping, art galleries, museums food and drink and abundant local hospitality.

Lovely Hotel

Anon, stayed: September 2019

Extremely friendly staff on reception.
Service in the restaurant was also excellent. Food is definitely quality rather than quantity so don't expect huge portions but meal was gorgeous.

One night in Matlock Bath

Alan B, South Yorkshire, stayed: August 2019

Revisited this hotel after 46 years. Still as good as we expected even though there had been a major refurbishment.
We will definitely return, making sure we have time for a swim in the natural water swimming pool.

Not a memorable stay

Graham, Nottinghamshire, stayed: August 2019

We were told we could not book in to the hotel until 3PM, but the wedding party were already there and booking in ahead of us. This was poor planning. We hoped to go for a dip in the pool but it left it a bit late for that by the time we were checked in and settled. We were told we had been upgraded to a Deluxe Room, but the shower was either red hot or cold and the temperature was not easily adjusted. The gourmet meal portions were tiny, meaning you have to choose a pudding which my wife could not have on her diet. Given the small amount of food at night, we would have preferred a larger English breakfast option.

Some bits Great others not so great

Kypros, Herts, stayed: July 2019

The good bits. The room was freshly decorated with modern furnishings the bathroom was new and luxurious.
The bad bits.No hair dryer! No Safe and the bath could do with a grap handle for older guests.
The restaurants were pleasantly decorated in a minimalist style. The meals were very good but the breakfast lack variety. No cold meats no fresh fruit salad.
The service was good except but could have been a lot better if they had adequate staff.
The greatest fault, rather disturbing really, was the lack.of evacuation procedures in each room!
If there was a fire we wouldn't know where to go or how they would have ensured we were accounted for! This needs urgent attention.

Stay spoiled by costumer service

PA, Nottinghamshire, stayed: July 2019

We have stayed at this hotel previously but the pools was not open then so we were looking forward to visiting to try it out on my birthday.
We weren t disappointed by the pool it was fabulous especially on a very hot day.
Unfortunately on returning to our room to shower we had a problem with the temperature control in the water, it was either scalding hot or cold, we couldn t get anything in between.
We contacted reception as we thought it may be something we were doing wrong, only to be met with disinterest!
We had a fabulous dinner in the restaurant with fabulous service by the staff in there and received excellent service at the bar.
Following another cold shower in the morning we had breakfast which was included in our stay. We did notice that the breakfast was not as good as last year and no longer included the egg menus that we had previously.
After breakfast my husband went to reception to report the shower and was told that the management team were in a meeting and they would come to find him it s the pool when they had finished, needless to say they did not appear in the garden so at 2 pm as we were leaving my husband again enquired about speaking to a manager as were now quite irritated by the attitude.
He was told no one could talk to him and if he had an issue they had asked that he e mailed his complaint to them!!
This is not the kind of customer service you expect to receive from an establishment such as this and left us with a very different memory of our stay here.

New Bath Hotel & Spa at Matlock

Sarah B Dorset, stayed: June 2019

This hotel is mainly an events type hotel as my husband and I soon found out. We booked to stay for 5 nights as we'd chosen to stay here for our summer break. Our room was a long way from the main reception and up several flights of stairs. We struggled to get our luggage up to our room as there was no lift. There was no coffee only tea inour room. Only 5 clothes hangers provided between us. On our first night we booked to eat in the restaurant. The food was delicious but although we'd informed the the reception on our arrival of my husband's nut allergy, it was not passed to the kitchen so consequently he was served with a dessert that contained nuts. We only discovered this when we asked one of the staff to check with the chef. It was totally not his faultnd but he did apologise personally to us. On our second night - the hottest night of the year, a party was in full swing. The guests appeared to be under 20 yrs and we were kept awake past 12 pm by the noise of alcohol fuelled party goers. I complained to reception about the noise from the party which had spilled out into the garden underneath our window. Reception apologised for the noise, suggested we close the window and they would provide us with a fan! Our stay was really dissappointing and was not the relaxing break I'd hoped for nor do I think it was worth the money we paid The Spa was tiny - only enough room for 6 people at a time. The hotel staff were pleasent but no Managers made the effort to come and see us about our complaint. The restaurant menu remained the same every night. The staff were surprised that we'd booked for 5 nights.Maybe Offpeak Luxury should only recommend this particular hotel for VERY short stays only.
