History of the hotel
Whispering Pine Lodge began life in the 1800s as a hunting lodge on land owned by the MacMartins of Letterfinlay. In the mid-20th century, it was transformed into a hotel known as Letterfinlay Lodge. Over the years, successive additions and renovations helped the lodge gain a reputation among visitors from England and Germany, who travelled to the Highlands for hunting, fishing, and the quintessential Scottish countryside experience.
The lodge's picturesque gardens overlooking Loch Lochy became a celebrated setting for fine dining, elaborate dinner parties, and exceptional Highland hospitality. Its charm and location attracted a host of notable guests, including Hollywood star Burt Lancaster during the filming of Local Hero and French jazz legend Stéphane Grappelli, often hailed as the grandfather of jazz violin.
Adding to the lodge's mystique is the legend of six caskets of gold sent by the Spanish to finance Bonnie Prince Charlie during the Jacobite rebellion. Rumour has it that this treasure remains hidden somewhere in the forests around Loch Lochy, waiting to be discovered.
