Restaurant 56

Restaurant 56 is the fine dining restaurant at Sudbury House, offering elegant and diverse tasting menus, with modern British dishes incorporating refined twists to tempt and delight.

The story is one of resilience and new opportunities as a Grade 2 listed building, originally a distinguished Georgian home, has been transformed through sensitive refurbishment and redecoration, the addition of antique furniture, sculptures and stunning artwork.

Restaurant 56 is situated in the oldest part of the Sudbury House Hotel in Faringdon. This new fine dining restaurant, under the helm of award winning chef, Andrew Scott opened its doors in February 2014.

A Lovely Place to Stay

Anon, stayed: November 2018

We stayed at Sudbury House for our 37th wedding anniversary after our daughter bought us a luxury hotel break voucher for my birthday. The hotel was lovely, clean and welcoming. We asked for a quiet room and were put a distance away from the reception area which was fine and very quiet. It was late November so the hotel wasn't very busy but I'm sure if it had been we would still have receive the same attention. My wife was unwell on the day arrived so we had to change our dinner arrangements which was done without a problem. We dined in 56 the following night instead and the food was delicious and staff were very attentive. Breakfast was fresh and plentiful. There were 3 things we had to report to reception, the bath waste mechanism was not working and loose, the light in the corridor outside our room was not working and the room service we order arrived without a cover from the kitchen. Apart from these little things we enjoyed our stay.

Birthday visit

Ela, West Midlands, stayed: June 2018

Arrived on a wonderfully sunny day, our room was lovely and the location was superb. The staff were extremely friendly and attentive, very professional and helpful. Faringdon was a minute's walk away with other attractive Cotswold villages nearby. We will definitely be coming back!

A memorable stay

A, Worcestershire, stayed: June 2018

We stayed here for a birthday treat and were not disappointed. From the moment we arrived we knew it was a special place just by the welcome. Our luxury suite took our breath away and as if that wasn't enough Restaurant 56 made a very special place for the birthday celebrations (even with a card signed by all the staff.) The food was top notch and the staff seemed justifiably proud to serve it and tell us about it. One of the best places we have ever stayed in.

Friendly and helpful staff at a comfortable hotel

TonyW, Hampshire, stayed: September 2017

I was particularly impressed by the staff at the Sudbury House Hotel. They were friendly, welcoming and efficient, and always ready to offer help for instance, to those who couldn't work out how to open the drawers in their bedroom, because there were no handles.  The rooms were somewhat austere in appearance; obviously a designer had been at work! Our room was adequately equipped for a 2-night stay, but you'd be a bit short of space to store your clothes if you were staying longer. Everything was of good quality, and very clean. The beds had the usual decorative cushions you find everywhere these days what are you supposed to do with the things when you want to go to sleep? We dumped ours on the floor.  We greatly enjoyed the food in the Brasserie. It was well cooked and was served very efficiently. The lounge was comfortable with a well-stocked bar. There was plenty of information about Faringdon and the surrounding area. The hotel was a nice place to come back to after a day out, and we enjoyed our stay there.

Half and half

AS, Somerset, stayed: June 2017

Excellent fine dining restaurant, but only open Wednesday to Saturday. Self service breakfast OK for business people, but those on a relaxing stay woukd like something better.
Rooms small, no proper wardrobe, two tiny drawers, again, OK for overnight, but not for a longer stay.
Lovely grounds.

We had a great time there but two nights was just not long enough to appreciate the hotel and location had to offer but we are going back there again for a longer stay to enjoy the hotel.
