History of the hotel
Fowey Hall Hotel occupies a commanding position at the top of the charming fishing village of Fowey, Cornwall. Once a thriving trade port and Royalist stronghold during the English Civil War, Fowey is now renowned for its sailing culture and its literary connections, most notably with long-time resident Daphne du Maurier, author of Rebecca and Jamaica Inn.
The history of Fowey Hall is closely linked to its original owner, Charles Hanson, a local boy who left Fowey to make his fortune and returned a wealthy man determined to build a showpiece home. Legend has it that the manor's prominent location was chosen so that Hanson's former fiancée, a vicar's daughter living across the estuary, could always see it.
Charles Hanson went on to become a nationally prominent figure, serving as MP for Bodmin and Lord Mayor of London. He shared a close friendship with Kenneth Grahame, author of The Wind in the Willows, who often stayed in the Fowey Hall Coach House. Letters from Grahame suggest that elements of Fowey Hall, particularly its interiors, inspired the description of Toad Hall in his classic tale.

For younger guests, the Ofsted-registered Four Bears Den provides a safe and imaginative space for children up to age 8, complete with toys, art supplies, and dressing-up clothes.
